Many types of decoration are also used, such as miniature toys and jewelry. Some of the hangings are just pretty, with the use of color, design and stitchery and others, done on special order, follow a theme. They are hung on handmade antique wooden rods with specially turned knobs completing the assembly.

The use of special lining and drapery weights eliminate the need for a bottom rod, resulting in a much more attractive overall effect. Helen Herring is doing much of the designing and firing of the copper enameled tops for boxes of all sizes being handmade from several woods including walnut, mahogany and oak. Each box is finished differently and although expensive, back orders are stacking up from galleries in which they are being The products of this design center are available only through the galleries in which Mrs. Herring is represented and by special order. It is not a store.

There will never be mass production because it is impossible on a large scale to obtain and retain the quality demanded by Mrs. Herring. It could be a frantic operation but it isn't, because of the quiet reserve and method-toward-a-purpose approach of its leaders. CENTER A FAMILY OPERATION There is, however, an advantage to the center immediately apparent in a quick visit. It is basically a family operation with parents, sons and daughters working together and very happily so in wholesome rapport. The candle holders exemplify the operation. Mrs. Herring and Mrs.

Buckland have arranged for sizable timbers from a local lumber yard. These are turned over to Bill Herring, 17, along with some general instructions on length and size. On his father's lathe, he follows a basic design but otherwise does whatever he wants to do within the shape. Every holder comes out different, and this is as desired. Each holder receives a basic coat of white paint upon which Mrs.

Herring draws the individual design each, however, fitting a general pattern of floral, heads, carousel or bird motif. It then goes to a large table surrounded primarily by teenaged girls including Karen Buckland and Helen Herring who dunk string in paste and follow Mrs. Herring's design, this procedure providing a two-dimensional effect. It ts then painted, usually in several bright colors and Mrs. Herring does the final process to achieve an antique effect.

When completed, each holder has six coats of paint. Mrs. Buckland makes the candles, color keyed to the holders. They are short and fat with a unique wick developed by Mrs. Buckland which provides for a large flame and more even burning candle.

She does about 15 every day and each must be perfect. The elaborate base topped with the simple, undecorated, properly colored and individually scented candle is the key to this combination which is proving most popular. Being individual but in a large way, the candle making started with the purchase of two tons of wax! 'The kids are getting a big kick out of this. They feel they are a part of it and they are occupied. This is something for teenagers today," Mrs.

Herring said in a voice slightly raised to transcend the latest "pop" tune emanating from the radio which occupies the center of their table. The only member of these two families who is not occupied in the center is Brice Herring, 4, who just has fun and there is lots of opportunity for this in such a busy place.
