He'll sit out Saturday. McConnell is Air Force's leading rusher (594 yards, 8 touchdowns) and passer (690, 5 TDs). But sophomore Beau Morgan is more than capable running the offensive show, and he's got experience, playing in all nine Falcon games this season. Utah's own offense, meanwhile, can't afford another outing like last week's.

The Utes roared to a 21-3 lead against New Mexico but were shut out in the second half. The Lobos did an effective job of shutting down Utah's dynamic receiving duo of Claiborne and Curtis Marsh. The pair was held without a touchdown for the first time this year. The Ute defense missed a season-high 31 tackles (the previous high was 12) against the Lobos and allowed over 400 yards of total offense. All of those less-than-sterling statistics aren't lost on McBride but he remains upbeat "Our guys will be ready," McBride said.

Sure enough, if Utah beats the Falcons on Saturday and rival Brigham Young Nov. 19, the Utes will capture their first conference crown in 30 years. Up first, the soaring Falcons. Air Force coach Fisher DcBerry's bunch has rebounded after an 0-3 start.

Their traditionally tough option offense has been in high gear again this season, churning out a VAGbest 319 yards per game. Plus, McBride added, "They're a much improved defensive team than the one we've faced the past two years." Still, Utah has won the last two outings against Air Force 41-24 at home last year and 20-13 in Colorado Springs in 1992 and appears to be catching the Falcons with their strongest wing dipped.
