College Football Roundup Notre Dame, Toledo Saturday, October 23, 1971 PIQUA DAILY CALL 13 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Most people will tell you Notre Dame and Toledo are oceans apart when it comes to football--the rankings say otherwise-but they'll both have one thing on their minds today revenge. The last team to beat Notre Dame was Southern California. That occurred in the final regular season game a year ago 38-28 and It merely cost the Irish the national championship, since they went on to beat topranked Tezas in the Cotton Bowl. The winning streak has reached six games, thanks to this year's 5-0 record which has Notre Dame ranked sixth. Guess today? Right.

That six-game skein is just a modest little drop in the bucket, though, compared to Toledo's. The Rockets, Ued for 14th in The Associated Press poll, have won 29 in a row--six this season--and one more will tie Texas' 30-game (1960-70) as the third longest of modern times among major football colleges. Just ahead are Oklahoma's 31- game string (1948-50) and another of 47 Have One Thing In Common Revenae the 1953-7 Sooners. Toledo last lost No in stanfnrn- by the 1963-7 Sooners. Toledo last lost Nov.

6, 1968, to Dayton 10-3. Guess who comes to Toledo, Ohio tonight? Right. The top three teams are on the road- Nebraska at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma at Kansas State and Michigan at Minnesota. The rest of the Top Ten will be at home--Houston at No. 4 Alabama, Clemson at No.

5 Auburn, Texas Christian atNo. 7 Penn State, Kentucky at No.8 Georgia, North Texas State at No. 9 Arkansas and Washington State at Redskins Test Kansas City; Vikes, Colts Battle Monday No. 10 Stanford. Notre Dame hasn't beaten Southern Cal since 1966, losing twice and tying a pair.

The Trojans were 5-4-1 facing unbeaten Notre Dame a year ago and take a 2-4 mark in this time. Quarterback Chuck Ealey pulled Toledo to a 35-24 victory over Western Michigan last week after the Rcckets trails entering the fourth period. Ealey passed for 381 xards and four touchdowns, broke five records and tied a sixth and drew the following praise from Coach Bill Doolittle of the losers: By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The National Football League gets under way a few hours early this weekend but a lot of fans will still be holding their breath until Monday night. In the NFL's only regularseason Saturday night clash, the Buffalo Bills invade San Diego tonight, looking for their first victory of the year. But the big bashes in this sixth weekend of action send Washington's undefeated Redskins against the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday's top attraction, and, on national telvision Monday night (ABC, 9 p.m., EDT), Minnesota's Vikings host the Baltimore Colts in what looms as a murderous defensive grind.

Elsewhere Sunday it's Detroit at Chicago, Cincinnati at Oakland, Miami at the New York Jets, the New York Giants at Philadelphia, Green Bay at Los Angeles, Denver at Cleveland, San Francisco at St. Louis, New Orleans at Atlanta, New England at Dallas, and Houston at Pittsburgh. Billy Kramer has made a lot of people all butforeget about Sonny Jurgensen. Now the Redskins' quarterback, along with Charley Harraway, Larry Brown, Roy Jefferson and a solid defensive unit, goes for victory No. 6.

But they'll be up against another tight defensive squad in the Chiefs who, with Len Dawson at the helm, are once again dueling with Oakland in their annual scrap for leadership in the AFC West. The Colts and Vikings are 1-2 in begrudging opponents the fewest points in the league. Both are like cement walls when it omes to yielding yarda ge on the ground. The Colts hold a slim half-game lead over Miami in the AFC East while Minnesota is Ued with Detroit for first in the NFC's Central Division. The Chargers haven't won since their opening-game upset against Kansas City.

The Bills haven't won at all. But their quarterback, Dennis Shaw, will have some extra incentive as he returns for the first time to the scene of his collegiate brilliance with San Diego State. The Lions will be without cornerback L. Barney, sidelined by a groin injury. But the Bears will be without a lot more.

Injuries force them to go with third-string quarterback Bobby Douglass and reserve running back Shy in place of Gale Sayers. Quarterback Vireil Carter is still out for the Bengals but Daryle Lamonica who came back from an injury to direct the Raiders to a second-half comeback victory against Philadelphia, will start this time. Eldridge Dickey, however, may replace Rod Sherman at wide receiver for Oakland. Bob Griese will be aiming his passes for Paul Warfield and Howard Twilley and JimKiick and Larry Csonka will be grinding out the yardage as the Dolphins seek to avenge their loss to the Jets, the only one they've suffered this year. Bob Davis goes again for New York at quarterback after his sccessful debut a week ago against Buffalo.

Rick Arrington is questionable, so Pete Liske may have to start at quarterback for the winless Eagles, who, for the first tie in six games, are facing a team other than a 1970 divisional winner in the Giants. The Rams return home looking for their fourth straight victory that would keep them atop the NFC West. Green Bay, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the Central Division, but the Packers have whipped Los Angeles in their last three meetings. The Broncos finally won a game last week after 11 setbacks and two ties. But now they face the solid AFC Central leaders in the Brawns, who have an injury-free squad.

Free safety Larry Wilson, with a hip injury, is a doubtful starter for the Cardinals and John Brodie will be trying to take advantage of his absence to keep the 49ers within half a game of the Rams--or perhaps vault them over their rivals from California. The Saints are riding high ollowing" their upset victory over the Cowboys a week ago while the Falcons are reeling from injuries, including a hamstring pull that has forced quarterback Bob Berry to give way to Dick Shiner. The Cowboys meanwhile, will be hungry to rebound from their loss and shellac New England in the grand opening of their new home, Texas Stadium. Running back Woddy Campbell is due to return to the lineup for the winless Oilers while the Steelers need a victory to stay within striking distance of the Browns. Favored To Whip Badgers COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)-- Ohio State was a two-touchdown favorite today to whip Wisconsin in a Big Ten football battle and keep the Badgers winless here in Ohio Stadium's 50 seasons.

TheBuckeyes, 3-0 in the league and 41 over-all, needed a triumph to retain at least a share of the Big Ten lead. They were tied with Purdue and Michigan. Wisconsin, 2-1 in the conference and 3-2-1 for all games, was shooting for an upset to remain in the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl pictures. Ohio State, ineligible for the Rose Bowl this season, had whipped Wisconsin 11 straight times and owned a 14-2-3 record here against the Badgers. Both sides were near their physical peak for the game being watched by an Ohio Stadium throng of 86,000 and millions more on regional television to 67 per cent of the nation.

Neil Graff, Wisconsin quarterback who has passed for 811 yards and four touchdowns, was ready for the Badgers after an ankle sprain last week against Michigan State. Don Lamka, the Ohio State signal caller slowed by separated shoulders in the last few games, was back at the Buckeyes' throttle. Ohio State fullback John Bledsoe was idled again with a deep-thigh bruise. His spot was being handled by erstwhile tailback Rick Galbos. Sophomores Elmer Lippert and Morris Bradshaw were working at tailback.
