Between he promoted the Reidland-Farley Lions Club and the Reidland-Farley Fire Department. The -first effort began in the late 1940s and the latter in the 1950s; Nicholson started to. work for the Illinois Central Railroad in the first week of 1937.

He built himself a home in Reidland, where he continues to live. Then came his marriage to Miss Mary Mitchell in 1940 and- the home, built for invest: merit purposes, became the home for the Reidland Road was only a. lane when Nicholson built the house. Not long afterward, it was developed into U.S. 68.

Work wasn't too steady in the 1930s, so Nicholson took an examination and later was named' a' substitute" letter carrier and worked out of the downtown U.S. post office. His first day on duty was Nov. 18, 1940. Following 2'2 years as a substitute, he became a regular carrier.

In his final six years, Nicholson was known as a swing man. He worked on five separate routes a week while carriers had a day off. Nicholson is a charter member of the Lions Club and. has served the organization in every capacity except that of, Lion tamer and tail twister.

Nicholson will be remembered for his effort in several Lions Club minstrels when, giving it his best, he had a role of soloist. His most outstanding effort was "Last Night on the Back Porch I Loved Best of All." Mrs. Nicholson has served the Lioness Club in a number of ways. She is a past president and now is the secretary. Nicholson's longest continuing effort for his community will benefit now that he has retired.

He Is the fire chief of the Reidland-Farley Fire Department now operated by the Reidland-Farley Fire Protection District. The Community Fire Association was formed in 1954 not long after Reidland High School burned to the ground. The organization raised funds through memberships and otherwisefor a fire truck. Nicholson became a director of the group in 1955 and has served it ever since. became assistant fire chief in 1958 and fire chief in 1964 following the death of his friend, Raymond Freeman, who was the first fire chief.

He served CFA and. its successor, Reidland-Farley Fire" Department and now, in addition, is elected trustee the fire protection district while continuing to serve as fire chief. 'f i For several years, he was secretary-treasurer of the first two groups. His duties included collecting annual dues, keeping records, and helping to manage the financial affairs of a struggling organization that somehow Tcept its head above difficult financial waters.
