The High School, The Howlers, The Parade, The Ball, The Banquet, Etc.

Gay and Festive Occasions. This is to be a lively week in El Paso. First, there are the annual graduating exercices of the high school to be held to-day, along with the musical entertainment this afternoon and the unique entertainment this evening. The graduating exercises will be held at the opera house, beginning at 10 o'clock this morning and lasting probably an hour and a half or two hours. The exercises will consist of music, essays by the graduating pupils, an address by the Rev.

Mr. Whaling, and the usual commencement ceremonies. At 2:30 p. m. a musical entertainment under the direction of Mrs.

Smythe will be given.also at the opera house. At 8 p. m. the high school will give a nique entertainment at the opera house, consisting of music, calisthenics, fan drill, broom drill, waud drill and military tactics. The morning and afternoon exercises are free, but an admission fee is charged for the evening Entertainment, to help meet the cost of guns, uniforms and other expenses of the occasion.

THE FIREMEN. To-day the visiting firemen will begin to arrive and for the next three days he city will be full of them. Tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock the grand parade will take place, followed by public exercises at the opera house. Thursday evening will witness the ball and Friday evening the banquet. The work of the convention will be done during the days Thursday and Friday.

TIIE nOWLKUS. By no means least on the program of the week is the appointment which the Howlers have made with the public for to-morrow evening. The Howlers, as nearly everybody knows, are an organization of young men of the city, barned together to raise funds to purchase a town clock. Their plan of operation is to give public entertainments at intervals of a few mouths. They have been preparing about three months for to-morrow evening's effort, which will certainly eclipse all their former undertakings.

The program will be a varied one, and will include some of the most amusing local hits over put on the stage here, OWENS ACQUITTED. One of The Seven Murder Trials Disposed of. The district court was occupied yesterday with the trial of Henry Owens, colored, charged with the murder of Bird Penu in the recent shooting affray at John Wood's saloon on South Oregon street. District Attorney Dean conducted the prosecution and Leigh Clark the do-fense. A panel of 60 jurors had been summoned and eight more were needed to fill the box.

The jury was completed about noon, as follows II. C. Miles, Wm. II. liong, Jos.

Schutz, Jno. P. O'Connor. Will W. Fink, Noyes Rand.

Otis Turner, G. E. Bovee, H. S. Lyter.

Daniel Morris. K. R. Wiggins, Geo. Look.

The taking of testimony began at the afternoon session and was completed about 5 o'clock, when the case was submitted to the jury without argument. The state utterly failed in making a case against the accused. It was proven that there was shooting but there was no 'evidence to show that Oweus tired the fatal shot or that he was the first to fire. On the other hand, the witnesses' for the defense swore that began the shooting ami Uiut Owens did not shoot till towards the' end of the affray. After being out fifteen minutes the jury returned a verdict of "not guilty." and Owens was discharged, For the Time.

Bring along your household and kitchen furniture. I will pay you a good price for all you want to sell. M. Bacon, 400 El Paso street; Ii ail way Delayed a Istial at This Season. This is the time of the year when the fleecy clouds are in the habit of suddenly turning black, opening their water spouts and deluging the dry and arid plains of western Texas.

New Mexico, Arizona and southern California, carrying away not only bridges but whole miles of track and delaying trains indefinitely. Owing to the great care exercised by the railway officials and employes, there is seldom a wreck on account of washouts, but there is no end of annoyance on ac count of late trains and delayed The Texas Pacific train due here Sunday morning at 10 o'clock did not cume in that day. The cause of the delay was a serious washout this side Big Springs. The Galveston Harris burg and San Antonio train due here at 11:15 a. m.

Sunday arrived about 9 o'clock Sunday evening, having been delayed by a cloud burst this side of San Antonio. The Santa Fe train Sunday evening was about two hours and a half late, though that road has been very fortunate thus far in escaping washouts and overflows of the Rio Grande, The Southern Pacific, which suffered so long and severely last year, has also escaped serious trouble as yet this season. THE TEXAS rACIKIC WASHOl'T. The train that came in on the Texas Pacific at 7 ojclock last evening brought fuller particulars of the catastrophe to the Texas Pacific. The train was only a "stub train," made up this side of the washout.

It brought no passengers and no mail except local mail picked up on the way. The washout is on the stretch of low track a few miles this side of Big Springs. For a long distance, some say for miles, the track is completely submerged, and the country has become a lake. The length of track under water and the extent of the damage can not yet be told, because no thorough examination has been made yet. It will probably be several days before trains will pass over the track which is now under water.

The trains which left El Paso Saturday and Sunday were both stopped this side of the washout and there the passengers and mails awaited transfer. It was last evening that to-day's incoming Texas Pacific train would bring the mails which 6hould have come Sunday and yesterday as well as the regular Tuesday mail, making three days mail in a lump. The Texas Pacific train which should have left here at 12:30 p. yesterday t.al not go out till about 9 o'clock last night. It is belie veil that passengers and mail will be tranferred each day hereafter till the track is again clear.
