DAILY GAZETTE. FORT WAYKE. IND." JH05Dir. JBHE 11, 1666. DEATU Or SAJttUKL HAftNAi Tbs pilio will be ttirprised and pained to learn of the sadden death of par honored lellow citizen, Samuel Hinnv He died at bis residence in Ihia city, at one o'clock this afternoon.

The citizens of Fort TVayna re requested to meet at the Court IIoum tomorrow erening, at 7 o'clock, to make ar rangementi for the appropriate obtemnce of the ebsequies ot the deceased. THE GRAND KATIDS AnD INDIANA BAItROAD. On enquiring we learn that the citizens along the line ol this road haVe taken, and still manifest a very deep Interest in its success, and that the public is giving it the most substantial evidences of its good Will. The present population, and the business already developed, for 160 miles north of Fort Wayne, will average with any part.cf the 'West of like extent. For forty miles further to the North, tnere aresparce settlements.

But on the remaining U2 miles, there are no settlements immediately on the Along the Lake, on the West, there are occasional settlements, averaging from six to forty miles from the The. products for shipment, where the country is settled, are equal to any In the West. And the newly settled districts will produce more busi ness for the road than is usual for new settlementsby reason of the abundance of lumber ot all kinds. The cities and vitiligos on the line of the road are the following The city ot Fort Wayne, and the villages of Huntertown, Swan, villa, Lisbon, Kendallville, Borne City, Wolcottville, La Orange, and Lima, In the State of Indiana and Storgis, Nottawa, Mendon, Brady, Coop er, Plain well, Martin, Loma City, and the city of Grand and the villages of Laphawville, Cedar and Big Baplds, in Michigan. Of private land holders, a majdrlty have released the right of way.

A few have had their lands appraised by Commission ers and paid for, some have compromised and been paid, of what has not yet been obtained judging from the interest mani fested in the road the balance can be had at a very Small cost. Over the public lands, such as belong to the State if Michigan and the Cnitod States, the right of way bas been provided for by legislation, so that no difficulty is to be apprehended in that case. At some of the most important points on the line, the necessary grounds for tho depot and station proposed, have been donated to the company. It Is believed that no considerable amount will have to be paid for any such lands in any case. These facts go to show both.the ability and the willingness of the people along the line of this road contribute liberally towards its construction, as well as the capacity of the district traveled by the road, to contribute business sufficient to sustain it when put in running condition.

And all these facts when properly considered, go to show the importance of this enterprise to the citizens of Fort Wayne. A railroad, 350 miles in length, terminating at this point could not but contribute largely to the prosperity of our city, but pepetratihg such an extent ofcountry, having such a great variety of natural re sources sis the country along the line of this road has, Its completion would add more than any other to our general business, and Is, therefore, worthy of hearty assistance. THE CHOLERA. There were reports oi several cases of cholera in Kew York on the 9th, and two deaths In Oliver street, though grave doubts are entertained as to the exact character of tho disease. No alarm is folt.

The excitement is increasing at Segu lne's Point, and many Staten Islanders declare that they won't have quarantine grounds there. Next. Monday or Tuesday they hold a meeting to denounce the au thoritics, and urge that some other place be selected. Three new cases of cholera are roported on the. hospital ship, and two in the city of Sew Tork, since Saturday; one, that of Mrs.

Boll, in 20th street, terminated fa tally, (he other, that of a man In Hester street, yielded to proper treatment. Vat' ters at Seguine's Point remain quiet. Disturbances were expected there, but noth ing of a riotous character occurred, owing to vigilance on the part ot the force stationed Allen County Agricultural Society. SATURDAY, JCM5 9tb, 1860, Culture mi' Potataea Potat Hot Iletr Thrr Da In Ireland, Ac, Ac. i The Agricultural Society met last Saturday as usual; attendance fair; Pres.Nel son in the Chair.

It was thought best to postpone the dis cfission of the proposed Society for detection of horse as the committee on road laws was not ready to report, tho subject of Totato Culture was suggested. Mr, Armstrong Introduced the subject with some suggestions on the prevention of rot, recommending care in selection of oil. and time of planting. Thomas Covington, of Aboito, said ho was In the habit of sorting his potatoes iu tlrafall, keeping the largest for rooking, the medium sized for seed, and giving the smallest to thehogs. Ocnorallyplant the medium size, cut in two pieces.

Mr.Armstrong said ahelghbor or an ac quaintance once tried an experiment with the eyes alone. He dug or cut the eyes out and planted them, three or four in a hill. They brought a good crop, equal in every respect to the patches planted in the usual way. A good plan to cut the seed a few days or a week before pionting. Find the large seed to yield a more even product.

President Nelson laid he never had sue ceeded in raising potatoes here as they In the east. His father always selected his seed when tho potatoes woro dug, be foro thevwere stored away. He took seed potatoes from the bills that bad the most even productnevertakingsced irom a hill that had a great many small pota toes. He would raise 400 bushels to the Tal report of the msjority of the recon struction Committee, laid before Congress on the 8th, declares that the lately rebel lious States can only be restored to their political rights by the consent of Congress; that the Governors appointed by the Pres. ident bad no power to organize civil courts; and that no constitution hss been legally adopted in any of the States ex cept report further rep resents that Tennessee is the only one of the Stales at all qualified for represents tlon la Congress.

Wx are under obligations to Hon. Chss, Case, who is sow in New Orleans, for late pipers of that city. acre. Have tried some experi ments lately, planting seed of all sorts and sizes, determined to find out, if possible, why It is that we fail on this import ant The potato crop is a great item. Our soil is rich and it is a disgrace for Allen county to importing thou sands of bushels from Chicago and gan.

Every farmer ought to raise at least enough for bis own use. Mr. Sabbineton, of St. Jo, said that be had found that pieces with a great many eyes brought small potatoes; four eyes in a hill ere enough." Have raised 800 bush els to the acre, planting two pieces in a hill with two eyes each. found no difference in yield between largo and small potatoes.

Mr. Randall thought the climate had more to do with the potato crop, within certain limits, than the soil or culture. Potatoes require a cool and moist climate. They do well In Miehigan. Cannot be raised at all (except the sweet varieties) in southern latitudes.

Four hundred bushels to the acre is not an uncommon yield in New York'. Have not done, so well here. Six years ago planted one fourth of an acre of Jenny Lind. Got 90 bushels; not fit for the table, however. The largest crop of eatable potatoes I have ever known In this county was rais ed by Capt.

Reed 1000 bushels on four acres. Size of seed not a matter' of! consequence. The seedj potato docs not produce the new potatoes. They come from the shoot in the form of underground stems. This is illustrated in the case of sweet potatoes.

The shoots aro sprouted from the old potatoes any refer ence to size, and planted without the seed at all. Other potatoes could be raised in the same way. Simon Bdsall thought the season had more to do with the crop than soil or climate. Many years ago In this county we would dig sometimes half a bushel from one hill. Have bad no rot In mine till last year.

Would have had 400 bushels. to the acre without the rot. An acquaintance at Wabash raised 400 bushels to the acre some years ago, planted on the 16th of June. He selected smooth medium sized potatoes for seed. Mr.

English, of Madison, spoke at some length on the subject, giving some account of the mode of culture in Ireland, the great potato country of the world. The rot commenced in Ireland about 80 years ago. It was prevented for awhile by planting on sod, top dressing with lime and like material, and covering with straw manure. Over this the fresh sod was turned. never expected as large a yield from the lop (sma.1) end of the seed potato as from the other.

Planted cut side up, to give the sprouts a firm hold, in the soil. When the sod became exhausted the rot returned. Since com ing to America have practised the lazy American plan. We planted (in Eng land) in drills, 21 Inches apart, and the seed ten inches apart in the drill. When the sprouts were one or two inches out of the ground, we covered with a shovel plow, to give a strong stocky growth, per acre of soft potatoes for stock, were sometimes raised, but 400 bushels of eatable potatoes was our largest crop Have never done so well here as in England.

Good crop last year, well stored, but on opening sound them badly affected with black trot. Think the rot caused more by atmosphere than soil. Recommend straw manuro covering, Mr. Randall, in reply too remark rondo by Mr. English as to his use of the term "Irish potato," said that'the potato was a native of this country.

Was found wild here and taken to Europe by Raleigh In tha 10th century. Was soon raised very extensively in Ireland and so called the "Irish potato." Mr. Armstrong said he raised a good crop one year by planting on the lop of a hard sod and covering with rotted straw. His father covered the hills again with a plow Just alter tne sprouts were up. Al ways did well.

What about cultivation of the crop? Have found, in my experi ence, one plowing enough, if done at tho prcper time, With some after dressing with the hoe. As to drills or hills, the Shakers (pretty good authority) recommend planting in hills, three feet apart, one large potato to the bill, After some further remarks by Messrs. Taylor and Covington, the subject was dropped. On motion, the Fruit Commit, tee was authorized to makeup a blank form for reports on fruits, to be distrib uted among the members and returned In the fall, containing all Important particu lars, name, situation, size of tree, time of ripening, Ac. The value of such reports Is obvious, as the society will thus have in a systematic manner, the experience of our fruit growers.

Adjourned. It will be seen that the old question of I small vs. large potatoes for seed was left unsettled Is discussion, the experience) of the members being; as varied as) their opinions. The majority were In favor of a medium size and all recommended "more care In selection of seed than is usually exercised. Tbs truth of the matter was pre bably summed up In Mr.

Banjall'a remarks that the yield depends ratheron the quality of the seed than on it aiaejsd the varied results obtained ty experimenters In different modes'of planting must be attributed toother causes than adlfference In the sise of the potatoes planted. After the adjournment the members as sembled around the table and discussed the virtues ol a line lot of strawberries, (Russet's Prolific) sent in by Mr, Laidlow, of Wayne township.
