CnAMPION 'MLBDEEEB. Dispatch to Ui St. Lntl Globe Las. Veoa, N. M.j July 18.

The Daily Optia to night give an Inter estinjc account of the killing of Wlllr iatu Bonney, alias Billy the Kid, the noted desperado, at Fort Sumner on Thursday night. Immediately after receiving the news that Billy the Kid was lurking near Fort Sumner, JPat Garrett, sheriff of Lincoln county, went to that place taking with him John and, Kit McKlnney. Arriving in town they went to the house of Pete where Pat advanced and entered, leaving his companions at the door, and in a low tone of voice asked Pete if Billy the Kid was on his premises. He was told that he was not, but was not far on, The conversation between the two men had not lasted two minutes when a man in his stocking feet, heavily arm ed and with a stealthy step, pushed the open door noiselessly aside, and entered. Maxwell took In the situa tlon ata glance, and whispered in scarcely audible tone, "Say, that's him." Pat knew what that meant, but had not time to prepare himself lor action until the outlaw approached the bed on which Maxwell was re cllnlne.

and near which sat Uarrett Seeing a third party in the room, he asked: "Who are you?" The second time the question was asked, and as he came nearer with a pointed revol ver in nis nana aimed at a man he little thought was uarrett. The latter who had. taken advantage of the dim, uncertain light to get his weapon, ready for use, brought it to bear on the Kid, shot him through the heart at tne nrst pun or tne. trigger, tie died in two minutes, without uttering a word. Tne Optic tolnighteditorially says of tne anair: "uuiy tne ma was the terror not only of Lincoln county, but of the whole Territory; a young desperado who has long been noted as a bold thief, a cold blooded murderer, having, perhaps, killed more men than any person of his age in the world, has at last received his just dues.

All mankind rejoices, and the newspapers will now have something else to talk about. It is now in order for Pat Garrett to be well rewarded for his services in ridding the Territory of this desperado. He Hls in very moderate circumstances, but has spent many dollars in hls pursuit of the Kid. Already we understand a subscription paper is circulating, for this purpose. It should be signed by all, and other counties who alike breathe easier because the Kid is dead should join in and make a substantial showing of their appreciation of Pat Garrett.

Pat Garrrett is in Las Vegas and is receiving an ovation of congratulations from the citizens. He will probably be tendered a banquet. "Billy was only 20 years and 10 months old, good looking, and hailed from New York. His career commenced four years ago at CamD Apache, where he shot and. killed ames i oung, a uoverpment black emith.

The celebratad "Lincoln County war in 1878 gave' bim full sway. In June of that year he and four companions killed Sheriff Brady and Duputy Sheriff Hindman at Lincoln, riddling them with bullets from behind. In July of the same year he and five others killed Morris Bernstein, clerk, and James Roberts, waters man, at the1 Reservation. Aedunle of weeks after they took four of Chisum's Robert ueckurta, unaries urawrora, William Morten, and Frank Baker, prison ers, and shot them down in cold blood. One of his own men, John McCloskey, remonstrting, he shot and killed him.

Last year he shot and killed James Grant and John Garrish at Fort Sum ner. He was captured last December by. Sheriff. Garrett, at Stinking Springs, tried in April, and sentenced to be hanged on May 13. He eseaped on April 27, 'killing his guards.

He openly boasted that he had killed twenty one men, which is so, as their names can be given. For three long years this boy has kept a large and populous section in a state of terror, and our citizens are now overjoyed that he has at least met his fate. The Territory will pay Sheriff Garrett a reward or. nve hundred dollars, and the citizens of the Territory will endeavor to raise him twenty flve hun dred aonars more." Be of Good Cheer. One of the. romantic' ebisodes of a two weeks', stay at a Michigan summer resort Is going berrying. Nature has been pleased to establish a huckleberry ewamp or a blackberry patch within three miles of every village, lake, bay or grove in the State which claims to be a summer resort; The excursion to the swamp is the Idea either of an old friend who wants' the whole hotel to himself for the day, or else of iome romantic young lady who doesn't know a huckleberry from a pumpkin. The party wart very early in the morning to avoid the heat, and they walk In order to gather bou quets. In order to fall over roots, plunge over rotten logs, wrestle with nettles and drop into concealed holes and bogs.

The theological student from Kalamazoo says something about mosquitoes, and receives a reprimand that chills his soul. 'A bachelor from Canada turns back af ter. having one eye raked out by a limb, and the excursion votes to cut his A grocer, from Hag inaw nets mired in a swamp, and sly hints are thrown out that he came along with intent to spoil the excursion. The swam is never hearer than three miles; and the route invariably Includes three old slashings, half a dozen thickets, three bush fences, two creeks, two swamps and a cow with a bell on. There is always a geologist in the party) and when he calls a swamp ash tree a bass wood (t is in a tone which admits of no dispute.

The ornithologist points to a blue jay searching lor his Dreautaat ana, informs the excursion that wood peckers live to be fifteen years old and are of a retiring disposition. The botanist digs up a long wild tulip roof and parcels it out under the name of sar saparlla, and there are loud bursts of applause as the forest suddenly opens and admits a landscape composed of a log sohoolhouse, a yoke of oxen and a small boy with the brim of his hat chewed offby mosquitoes. The swamp is generally reached by noon, and the first thing in order Is to sit down in the bush and eat some mashed pickets, crumbled cake, rancid bread and butter and fuzzy looking corn beef put up in the hotel din ing room. With one season's experi ence an, intelligent excursionist can beparate the luncheon from the 'flies and mosquitoes and pass the latter to the fat woman from Grand Rapids, who thinks it would be fust too sweet for anything to live in a cave with a bear. A huckleberry swamp need not necessarily contain any huckleberries, but most of them contain from three to five.

They are reached after a push through a thicket, a wade through a swamp and a climb over a windfall. Sometimes they are a hundred rods apart, but are generally found in close company In the vicinity of a good place for snakes. Having secured the from three to five berries and placed each one in len quart pall or a peck basket, the grocer from Saginaw sud denly inquires what Infernal fool tin vented this picnic The theological student braces up at this and charges the fat woman with having lured him to destruction. She retaliates by calling the fclonde school teacher from Chicago a romantic fool, and by the time it gets around to the botanist he struggles up out of the windfall and offers to knock the geologist's head off for the small sum of a nickel, and give him six months' credit at that. When the excursion gets back to the hotel they meet thejband who went out to see a nidden lane and iouna only a dead mule; the band who went to the and found'onlva mud ho.e With a turtle, on a log; and the choice few Who sneaked off after trout and found a boy who had heard another boy say that he bad seen a creek with a shiner in it somewhere in the next county.

Then all Is joy and peace, everything is forgiven, and as the sun goes down every body takes a seat on the veranda and lies like a trooper about his weight, appetite and comfort, and declares that ne already feels 30 years younger. Thete combined beneficent effecta aye tpeedlly appreciable. Bird One' of the most surprising examples of animal or bird intelligence occurred in this city last evening. A lady was in the back part of her lot feeding little chickens from a dish filled with cornmeal and dough, when a brown thrush lit on the edge of the dish, pecked the lady's hand, and flying into the air hovered over her. The lady resumed her feeding again, when the thrush settled and Eecked her hand. Several times the irddld the same thing, each time flying off a short distance towards a hedge rence and then returning.

Finally the lady was thoroughly interested in tne Dira's movements and arose. As she did so the bird whirled over her several times and flew straight for the hedge. As the lady continued to stand the bird came back again, flew to the hedge some rods This time the lady followed, but every time she stopped the bird would come back, wheel around, and then fly to a certain spot in the hedge and hover around it. At last the lady went to the hedge, and approacning tne spotapove which the bird was circling, she was surprised to hear a faint, plaintive chirrup, and examining the spot found a you rig thrush caught between two branches in such a manner that it was fast being killed. 4 She released the bird, and holding it in her hand opened It to let it fly, but it was too much exhausted.

She then took it and set it on a post, when the old bird at once came and lit by its side, cares slug it in an overjoyea manner. As the lady walked to the house the' old bird flew toward her, hovering over her, and was'amrantly twittering its gratitude. HRdy watched the birds from the nwrW until the little one recovered sufficiently to fly. (Ottawa (Kas.) Republican.
