England's interests'are somewhat in a line with, those of This is a fact that will be regretted by many.

The general opinion is' that Mo iommedanism, as represented by the Turks, if, ajlemiah on modern civilization, and ought to be blotted out. It is owing tp that fact that Russia holds the good 'wishes of those who sympathize with civilization of our age. Eng land ia drawn to "the other aide because her possessions are in danger, and she must protect herself against the encroachments of Russia. "Iy past 'times England has been the nursury ground, of the manufacturing system; ker factories have' been visited, and her system of cotton' and other textile manufacturers have been copied by all nations, but the time seems to ihave arrived when we shall have visit Amer ica in the same way, and for the same, purpose." Such is the language used by the members of the Commission which had charge of the British Depart, ment at 'the Centennial with reference to the' American skill in the products of various manufactured articles. In the report referred to which was made to the English Government the Commission spoke in very commendable terms of the skill and genius of the American1 citizens.

In particularizing, one of the Judges says in regard to table cutlery, and edge tools, as well as also 'safes. America is in advance of Great Britain, and that 'strenuous ef forts will be required for Sheffield to hold its own. With reference to the sewing machines, it is willingly admitted that the United States stands preeminent. Another subject discussed is that of free trade and protection. It is ad mitted that protection permitted the United States to bnild up manufacturing interests that now are able to.com 1 pete with free trade countries, which could not be the case under a different policy.

In that, doubtless, the Commissioners are correct. These men speak from results, and are not bound down to theory or what works on political economy teach Here are results. Under what conditions were these, brought about? They were protected by laws until able to go ont and meet competition successfully. Under the circumstances is it proper to protect? These Commissioners are about persuaded that American Protection has been a good thing to this ATTEHPTEO HlJrWER. rAi BiTVgc Hmkurf rvea Ma oaiee BeeTe ftNine months sinceJMrs.

Fort Wayne, July 27; 1877. ON THE RAIL. ''Who will have to pay the damage done at Pittsburgh by the mob?" asks a correspondent of the Cincinnati Com mercial. "The State of Pennsylvania will have to pay the bill; the railroad company will loose nothing, says the Commercial in reply. If that fact were kept before those who are so decided in their wish that railroad companies should suffer, there would be less of that kind of talk.

The corporation looses really very little in the'end, save that they succeed in selling old and well used rolling stock: and dilapidated station houses at round to the public, and the tax payer foots the bill. The property destroy ed at Pittsburg will be paid by Pennsylvania, and will add an item to the State4 debt, which is wholesomely large already. The Pennsylvania CentralCentral will get pay for all damage done at figures that will be satisfactory. Juries which: assess losses of this kind never fail to do justice to those who sustained them. It is not correct to say that taxes in these times can be increased without serious detriment to the entire tax pay.
