Wilson Smith, of Hun tington, assistant general manager of the canal, appeared before the Board, and ex plained the needs of the caoaL the great lose which Its abandonment would be to this section of the country, the adrsntages which will result from Its maintenance, and the advisability of the county tsklne action under the law. The Hon. O. Bird, a Stale Senator from thli county who has just returned from Indianapolis, and la father of the measure referred to made some remarks on ibe subject favoring the proposed appro priation, and explaining the nature and objects of the law. The lions.

Jesse L. Williams and Pliny Honglsnd also sub mitted a few remarks in favor of an ap propriation, while Judge Carson opposed tt vigorously. Mr, Smith called the attention of the Commissioners to the fact that the Board of Connty Commissioners of TIppacaooe county have taken the Initiative in organ izingforthe purpose of Improving the canal. A petition was presented to them last week asking them to appropriate un der the new law 10,000 for the work, The Board regarded the petition with de cided favor, but desired to make their ac tion Influential in securing the co oper atlon of other counties equally Interested. They therefore have by resolution request ed that a delegate Convention be called at Peru, Miami county, to meet on next Tuesday, the 18th, at which all (he coun ties Interested In the canal shall be repre sented to "devise plana for the maintenance of the entire line of said canal for navlga tion.

He admitted however that the Qizrrn was a good and lively psper said that he took It and paid fur it cheerfully and reflected the senti ments of thousands of people when he ssld that he would sooner do without bis break fast than the QixtTTE. Mr. 8 1 ration wished to examine Wm.

Judge Carson remarked that all of the irregularities proven amounted to one five dollar bill that the defence would offer no evidence but leave the Board to do with the matter as It saw best. Mr. Stratum then made a lengthy and somewhat elaborate argument In support of the case of the prosecution. He read the statutes defining the duties of the Township Trustee, and then charged that Mr. Maier had violated this law In many instances and said that the Commissioners would do wrong In approving of his re port He supported his position by re viewing ana analysing carefully toe evi dence submitted In the Investigation, and closed with an earnest appeal to the Court to protect the Interests of our tax payers.
