Bliss East El Paso. Terms to suit buyer. Tobin, Phone 803. New York, May sentiment improved today. Although further weakness was exhibited by a few minor railroads and industrial shares, the representative stocks, after an initial period of heaviness, ruled slightly higher on the day.

The fact that good market existed for the New' York city bonds at par or better wras regarded as assuring. Rumors of forthcoming favorable developments were circulated in connection with a number of stocks, but speculative interests did not permit any bull moves. Bonds were irregular. The market gave a good exhibition of strength in the early afternoon and became decidedly more active on the rise. All of the well known stocks I were bid up a half point or more.

Heading, Lehigh Valley, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific wrere the strongest. Low priced copper shares were I bought heavily on dividend rumors. Shorts were'much perturbed over the aggressive rise in prices without appa- rent change in speculative conditions. Stocks were in scant supply except at steadily rising figures, and the ease with which Union Pacific jumped 2 and Reading two points testified to the extended position of these properties. Advances of between one and two points were scattered pretty liberally all through the list.

The market closed steady. The upward movement was checked when the Harriman stocks weakened on profit taking. Union Pacific and Southern Pacific reacted a point and other issues half a 3 much. Offerings were not pressed on the market extensively and the final dealings were characterized by dullness and a return to MONEY AND METALS NOTARY PUBLIC BONDS Issued for the full term for $2.00. The W. J. Hiles murder case has the rightofway in district court here. It was called for trial Monday morning, but was delayed by a motion inhde by the defence, asking for a continuance because of being unable to procure ma- teerial witnesses, though process had been sent to the county in which they resided. The work of selecting a jury was begun Tuesday morning, a venire ot 96 men having been summoned.

Miles is charged with killing T. F. Tucker, who was a commissioner of the county and prominent in several ways. The defence offered was that insult had been offered the wife of the and that, when explanation w'as asked, the deceased attempted to reach his pistol, when he was shot down by Hiles, who carried a shotgun. The shooting occurred in December.

Tucker was a Mason of high decree. In spite of this, however, three Masons were taken on the jury, the defence exhausting but eight of its 15 peremptory challenges.
