Lyons, Boston news commentator and curator of the Nieman Fellowships at Harvard, was named Friday to receive Colby College's annual Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award. The award is made to a newsman "who has contributed the nation's journalistic achievement" in honor of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, an 1826 Colby graduate killed in 1837 at Alton, by street mob angered by his editorials denouncing slavery. Lyons will receive the award at the Lovejoy Convocation Nov. 21 at the Waterville campus. He is editor of the Professional Journal, Nieman Reports and has an evening television news program on the Eastern educational network.

Mahoney, 48, of 275 Lakeview Cambridge, clerk of the uniformed police at Cambridge headquarters for six years, died Friday at Cambridge City Hospital. A member of the force for 23 years, Mr. Mahoney previously served in a cruising car and as radio dispatcher. Leward Lister Services Today Leward Lister, 55, president of the Boston investment firm of Lister and 80 Federal died Thursday night at Beverly Hospital. He was born in Caribou, and lived in Beverly for 38 years. He was employed by Beverly Trust Co.

for 25 years and had served as manager of the Beverly Farms branch. Several years ago he established his own investment firm. He was a member of St. John's Church, Beverly, and was active in community and United Fund work. He headed the Salvation Army drive for several years.

He leaves a wife, Susie (Sutter) Lister; a son, Rodman P. of Newbury; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara A. Poirier of Manchester; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Milton and Mrs.

Isa Rooney, both of Delmar, N.Y., and two brothers, Oscar and Cecil of Maine. Services will be in St. John's Church, Beverly Farms, at 2 p.m. today. Sir Frederic Hooper British Industrialist, 71 LONDON (Reuters) Sir Frederic Hooper, managing director of the Schweppes soft drink company and one of Britain's best-known industrialists, died Friday at the age of 71.

Besides being the chief of the huge 30 million pound (84-million) soft drinks firm, Sir Frederic was a recruiting adviser to the British Defense Ministry and a prominent television personality. Danvers Soldier Killed in South FT. CAMPBELL, Ky. (UPI) -Army officials disclosed Friday that one soldier was killed and 19 others injured when two military vehicles apparently sideswiped each other on a base road Thursday night. Killed was Timothy R.

Jennings, 20, of Danvers, Mass. He was a passenger in a 212 ton truck, carrying 20 enlisted men, which collided with an Army tractor-trailer. The soldiers were members of the 553d Engineers Co. he was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Josephine Pimental, of Mill Fairhaven. Atty. John A. Daly, 72, of 40 Larch Cambridge, retired executive secretary to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and former Cambridge city solicitor, died sud denly Friday at his home, Mr.

Daly, the son of Augustine J. Daly, former mayor of Cambridge and ex -associate justice of the East Cambridge District Court, graduated from Harvard College in 1911 and Harvard Law School in 1914. He had a long career in law which ended in 1961 when he retired from the post with the Supreme Judical Court. was the first to hold that posttion. He became widely -known 1948 when he was directed in by the Supreme Judicial Court to conduct an investigation into alleged misconduct by lawyers in the municipal and district courts in Suffolk County.

After a 15-month investigation Mr. Daly said in his report that "justice not for sale" in Suffolk County courts but added that certain lawyers should be censured for chargexcessive fees and resorting other abuses. JOHN A. DALY Mr. Daly was a sergeant in the Marines during World War I and was cited for distinguished service.

He conducted a private law practice with his late father and brother for many years in Boston. He was appointed solicitor of Cambridge in and city, served for many years. He was a past president of the Cambdidge Bar Assn. and a former member of the Judicial Council. One of his little known accomplishments was an ability to read 13 foreign languages.

He leaves a wife, Blanche (Brine) Daly of Cambridge. Harvard's V. O. Key Political Science Expert Prof. Valdimer O.

Key 55, of 36 Follen Cambridge, one leading political scientists, died Friday at Beth Israel Hospital after a long illness. He was Jonathan Trumbull Professor of American History and Government at Harvard University. Before joining the Harvard faculty in 1951 he served as head of the government departments at Yale and Johns Hopkins Universities. Prof. Key was author of "Politics, Parties and Pressure Groups," the leading text in the field for two decades.

He received the 1949 Woodrow Wilson Award of the American Political Science Assn. for his writing of "Southern Politics in State and Nation." His last work was "Public Opinion and American Democracy." Prof. Key was born in Austin, Tex. He received an A.B. degree from the University of Texas in 1929 and a Ph.D.

degree from the University of Chicago in 1934. While at Chicago he published a study of "Administration of Federal Grants to the States." A parallel study of Canadian grants-in-aid was being done by Miss Luella Gettys, another graduate student at GEORGE MASON George Mason, Ex-Stop Shop Personnel Chief SOUTH YARMOUTH Services for George Mason, retired employment manager of Stop Shop, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Folsom funeral home, Roslindale. Mr. Mason, a former West Roxbury resident, died Thursday after a four-month illness.
