THE BOSTON GLOBE FRIDAY. 17. 1937 Amusements NEW FILMS Movie Schedules Thoroughbreds Dont Cry The Story of the Motion Picture Starring Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland and Ronald Sinclair. (Copyright, 1937, Loews, Inc.) By HALSEY RAINES. I is "Manhattan Merry-Go-Round' and on the stage, a collegiate revue, composed of winners from Major Bowes' radio prograjn.

The show as a whole is too long, but there are some bright spots. The master of ceremonies, Ray rrond Earrett. does some pretty fancy stuff on a trick saxophone, and later he harmonizes with two at the same time. The Flying Top Hatters, roller skaters, perform some almost unbelievable stunts while whirling around at top speed. Then there is the Missouri Trio, that adds a new note to Sweet Sue and Put On ur Old Gray Bonnett.

The Edwards. brother and sister, tap dance, and the Glee Club, without which any collegiate revue would be incomplete. sings something about A Girl, A Boy and A Lamplight Next comes a blues singer, with a voice much less blue than her songs. Then the band goes on strike and when the Kremlin bells start to peal Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in C-Sharp Minor it breaks lntckswing. To finish off the show, the winners of the national shag dancing championship at Madison Square Garden truck it on down the groove.

When the stands received the announcement that the grandson of the late owner of The Pookah would ride his own horse in the big event, there was a wildly enthusiastic demonstration.

Outside the grounds, Timmie was moping up and down in dejection. He couldnt believe his ears when he heard of the latest turn, Roger on The Pookah! Desperately beggmg the friendly complicity of a cop who had always liked him, he hoisted himself up a wide-spreading oak tree which afforded a view of the entire panorama of the race. At the starting box were 15 beautiful thoroughbreds. Hop Skit, installed the favorite after Timmie had been disqualified, seemed to shake his mane proud defiance. Get back! cried the starter.

"All ready! In line! On your toes!" The bell clanged. The horses leaped across the barrier. A tremendous roar went up from the spectators. Two horses which hadnt figured much in the betting. Fiddler and Hustler, were ahead at the first turn.

Rayaway, with Boots- McGuire, was third, and Hop Skit, ridden by gimlet-eyed Dmg Read, a not-so-good fourth. Roger had got off to a poor start, and was far in the rear. Despite the handicap of trailing by such a margin, Roger kept his head. He had decided to follow Timmies precept of saving every ounce of energy for a final spurt. Out and around the far end of the track the racers sped.

Bit by bit Hop Skip and Ragaway pressed to the fore. Soon they had taken the lead. Meanwhile The Pookah. steadily increasing his pace, was closing up the gap. As he approached the home stretch Roger realized he would have to bore his way between Ragaway and Hop Skit.

The jockeys on the two horses were old hands at the game, and were determined that, no matter which one of the pair won, no outsider would get past. Look out! cried Roger. Give me room! Im going through! Go round em! screamed Timmie, from his perch in the tree. Theyll murder you! But Roger couldnt go round and still win the race. With unflinching courage he shot straight ahead.

As The Pookah reached the narrow gan directly'between the two leaders. Dink Read jerked Hop Skits head, and the three horses came together, in staggering impact. It seemed to the onlookers as though all three must fall. But both The Pookah and Ragaway miraculously kept their bearings, and plunged straight ahead. Down the stretch they came.

In the final 100 yards the British horse, with indomitable spirit, pulled inch by inch ahead. Over the finish line he sped at last half a length in front at this oxact moment Timmie lost his balance and fell from his tree. The stands were in terrific tumult. Some society woman rushed forward with a floral wreath. Wilkins, badly disheveled, clasped Roger by the shoulders.

RKO -BOSTON THEA TRE Vaudeville Headliners Trouble at Midnight The bill at the RKO-Boston Theatre this week may not be the best show of the season, but it is chockful of entertainment and an excellent holiday-shopping bill, with laughter as the chief ingredient and song as the undertone for the gay, irresponsible fun and a stirring film to make the whole an entertaining and pleasant offering. Outstanding in the vaudeville program is Nick Lucas, personable, quiet, and dignified crooning troubadour of radio, stage and screen. Mr Lucas has a most excellent voice and his enunciation is a delight. Once in a While, Tiptoe Through the Tulips, Josephine and a new number, provide a wide range for his talent. The audience liked all of it and made its pleasure evident with firm hand-dapping that was enthusiastic.

Red Skelton easily captures secondary honors with his nonsense, all amiable and whacky. Loud was the laughter at his impression of a young woman getting ready to go to work and bubbly was the reception of his comic essay on the art of dunking. The Three Samuels and Harriet Hayes combine some snappy dance steps with some eloquent comedy and their final military dance is a sure-fire number that evokes spontaneous applause. Woolfords pets, some cannily educated dogs who perform with zestful enthusiasm; the Two Zephyrs. Negro dancers who have raised slow motion to a titilating art, and the Variety Gambol, three boys and three girls who are whirlwinds of action, complete this entertaining and well-balanced staee show.

Though a grade film, the direction and the action is such that despite a spotty script, the film manages to be stirring from beginning to end. This in large measure is due also to the acting. Noah Beery Jr is an engaging young man and excellently cast aa the idealistic if somewhat naive operator of a large dairy farm, while Larry Blake offers a hard-bitten characterization of a gangster whose heart is "in the right place a fighting heart that asks and gives no quarter. The tight-fisted banker (Charles Halton).

the sly country editor, the blond waitress with the ethics of a nun, and the suave villain, all are typed characters, but somehow young Beery and Larry Blake, despite their rather stiff dialogue, rise above the typing and add the precious quality of good acting to a story that is crammed full of action. till a grade film but the best of its classification in many a moon. who was ensconced in a sort of detachable stable car in the rear. Up front, in the pivot car, were Timmie at the wheel with Roger and Cricket at his right. Gosh, I never dreamed Id be doing anything like this, mused Timmie.

No. especially when you tried to give Roger a black eys the first time you met him, interposed Cricket. If we hadnt fought we mightnt have become such good friends, said Roger. "How long do we stay at Pimlico? asked Cricket. Long enough to win the race, answered Roger, and to buy tickets for London.

Youre all coming over there as guests of The Pookah. The Pookah must have heard that, for a prodigious whinny sounded from the rear, sending a flock of Pennsylvania ducks in a mad scurry for shelter. THE END Showing of this picture started today at Loews State and Or-pheum Theatres. AMUSEMENTS ROW ON STAGE. IN PERSONt CHAPTER TV Back home, Roger had reached the point where he was willing to accept Doc Godfreys apparently well-menat offer of $7500 for The Pookah.

But just as he was placing pen to paper, to sign his name, a wild commotion sounded. It was Timmie. I got a thousand bucks! he replied, bursting in. Were all set for the race! Doc Godfrey turned a dozen different colors as Timmie, recognizing him now for the bogus medical attendant, flung the coat he was carrying in his face. The day of the big race was at hand.

Roger, helping Wilkins give The Pookah a final rubdown, was puzzled when a red-coated attendant hurried up to him and told him he was wanted at the judges stand. Hurrying there, his heart gave a thump when he saw Timmie. The latters face told more plainly than words, that something serious had happened. Mr Calverton, said the first steward, your friend here has just given us a very interesting statement. It seems he threw the Ridge-more Handicap.

Threw the Ridgemore! cried Roger incredulously. Thats impossible. Im afraid its very possible. We received information, we checked the facts, and Donovan has confessed. Roger turned to Timmie.

He wouldnt believe the story until he heard a confirmation from the others own lips. Its true, all right, said Timmie bitterly. Dad tricked me into it. Now hes trying to doublecross both of us by pulling me out of this race. Were not interested in any further explanations, said the steward coldly to Roger.

Were only interested in whether you were involved in what happened before. Involved! cried Timmie. He didnt know anything about it! How could he? I threw the race that he and Sir Peter had their hearts set on winning. Very well, said the steward. I hardly need to tell you that you are permanently disbarred.

He motioned a secret service man to escort Timmie away, then he turned to Roger again. You have about 15 minutes to find another jockey, he said. Roger tried to reason with them that he didnt know anybody that no one could ride The Pookah except Timmie but he realized how futile it was, and stumbled away, trying to collect his thoughts. By the time he reached the pad-dock, Cricket and Mother Ralph, havmg heard the startling news through the announcer, were at Wilkins side. Well, I guess its another race another day, said Roger sadly.

"Another race nothing! cried Mother Ralph. What else is there to do? I know what you can do, exclaimed Cricket excitedly. Timmie was giving you lessons. Ride The Pookah yourself! The notion was, at first, preposterous; but Roger had no time to consider its wildness. The first thing he knew.

Mother Ralph had seized him arm and was dragging young Federal agent also working on the case, is most Asiatic in his movements and the masklike Expression of his face. SCOLLAY AND MODERN "Gangway "Ebb Tide and "Pope ye There is a triple bill at the Scollay and Modern Theatres this week, of which one of the feature films, "Gangway, is a first run picture. Ebb Tide, photographed entirely in color, features the European star, Oscar Homolka, Barry Fitzgerald, formerly with the Abbey Players in Ireland, and Ray Milland, young English actor. Frances Farmer, the heroine, represents the American interests.

"Ebb Tide is adapted from a story by Robert Louis Stevenson and is laid in the South Seas, making it possible for the picture to have impressive coloring and beauty. Fopeye, usually a short feature, has graduated into a 20-minute long color cartoon, and deserves special mention as an attraction. Popeye the Sailor Man travels to the deserts of Arabia, meets All Baba and his 40 thieves, gets backs tneir loot, and manages to subjugate the Terrible All Baba and his men, all with the aid of a little can of spinach. Evenings at 8:00. to clutch the victor, while Mother Ralph and Cricket were beyond themselves with excitement. Only Donovan and his pals, who had plunged their last collective bank accounts on Hop Skit, were crestfallen. This was one sure thing that had given them a violent jolt. "Nobody could'a run the race you did today, kid, Timmie told Roger.

I guess it wasnt what I answered Roger, shaken but happy. It was The Pookah and the Calverton colors. A fortnight later, one bright, sunshiny morning, a little trailer cavalcade made its way along the main highway leading south. The Pookah, through his had been invited to participate in the big seasonal race at Marylands famous Pimlico track. Roger, at first disinclined to accept, decided to combine business with a real holiday.

Buying a second-hand trailer, he had persuaded Mother Ralph to take her first vacation from the boarding house in 10 years and to bring Cricket along with her. If anyone had glanced inside the trailers living room he would have seeen Mother Ralph knitting away, while engaged in a brisk conversation with Wilkins. The trailers sole responsibility on this expedition was to look out for The Pookah, the part of an American gangster in the story, who stands out as the most colorful character. Miss Matthews is cast as an assistant film critic on a London newspaper, who yearns to be involved in a lot of excitement. So her editor sends her on a first page action story, and she gets enough action to last her a lifetime.

At the conclusion of the story she gives up excitement as a reporter to become a countess. Barry Mackay, Olive Blakeney and Noel Madison are featured. AMUSEMENTS SMASH 2 HIT SHOW! Because of the tightening of the American immigration laws, the desire of many foreigners to seek their fortune in this country, and sharp-sters who are ever ready to cash in on any situation, alien smuggling has become a lucrative business for the gamblers and a continuous fight for the Department of Justice. The story cf Daughter of Shanghai is woven about a gang of alien smugglers who get their cargo into California by boat and plane. That is.

unless a "Government patrol spots them, in which event they calmly open a trap door and let these helpless, bewildered Asiatics drop to tneir death the ocean. Those they succeed in bringing into this country they force on business men as labor. Quan Lin, a San Francisco importer, refused to take any of the aliens, and so was murdered. His daughter, played by Anna May Wong, sets out to expose the racket and her fathers murderers. Her search takes her through many adventures, all of the hair-raising sort.

Anna May Wong handles this role as deftly and artistically as she has her many others, and her one dance is interesting from the point of view. 1 SPECIAL MIDNIGHT SHOW TONIGHT (FRIDAY) at 1 1 s30 P.
