Soar's impressionism conjures up the style of Erik Sntic; Tubin's noo-Romantic nones are reminiscent of the soaring lines of Richard Strauss, Both groups revealed the na-tionistic facet of Heinz Riivald, and the comfort of that idiom allowed the tenor to reach his vocal apex for the program. Not that the numbers by Watts, Charles, Giannin, Still and fect balance was also achieved, As for audience response, the crowd seemed undemonstra tive, but when this listener left, Mr. Riivald had just sung his third encore. mm JUJiiiLiWi NOW THRU SUN.

the tenor presented an interesting program of conventional arias and liedcr and a group of American songs, mixed appro-priately with some outstanding examples of contemporary Lstoninn pieces. Opening with the Agnus Dei from Bizet's "L'Arlesicnnc," Mr. Riivald paid eloquent trib ute to the memory of President Kennedy, while the audience- filling half the hall stood. Arias by Handel plus lieder of Schubert and Schumann constituted the first half of the program and, in the process, reflected Mr. Riivald's background with the Estonian Opera Company.

The control of his sfomndi is uncanny. He is able to evoke the full gamut of dynamic shadings, from the subtlest pianissimo to the most vigorous fortissimo. At all times, he communicates with his audience by means of believable, but never exaggerated, gestures. Mr. Riivald has his faults, but his self-assuredness com pensates most admirably.

The melismatic lines of Handel's "Comfort Ye," from the "Mes siah," were carelessly negoti ated; his English diction was unclear in spots; and he oc casionally strained on the high register pianissimos, which may seem paradoxical until one realizes that projecting soft notes makes greater demands on the diaphragm than do the loud passages. His interpretation of Schu bert's "Aufenthalt" and "Auf dem Wasser" and Schumann's "Frulingsfahrt" provided ideal outlets for the vocal warmth and histrionic suavity that would render Mr. Riivald a fine exponent of Viennese op eretta. This combination of instru ments was the pit orchestra music for the plays of Shakespeare and Marlowe. Such a consort was also the dance band of Elizabethan England. And as illustration, Friday eve ning. tne Julian Bream Consort made the music dance all night. The composers, of this Golden Age of English Music, included such professional musicians as William Byrd, Thomas Morley (who also held the monopoly to print music), John Dowland, and a well-heeled amateur, Richard Allison, who styled himself a "gentleman practitioner in the art of music." In general, the pieces heard take their rhythmic and structural organization from the dance forms then current in England.

There was the slow and stately pavanne, the livelier galliard, but there were also fantasias and occasional pieces with titles as charming as their contents: "Allison's Knell," Dow-land's "Forlorne Hope," Robinson's "A Toy." The Consort is comprised of tern and lute; and Robert Spencer, a baritone who plays the pandora and lute.
