He operated three restaurants, one in Boston, Peabody and Randolph and offered his services to the FBI so he could avoid prosecution from passing bad checks. Haimowitz, was involved in the falsification of Abbott's application for an SBA-backed loan of $450,000 which was used to purchase the restaurant. Seven civil suits against Abbott or Abbott's Restaurant have been filed in the county courthouse in Jacksonville by creditors seeking more than $150,000 in damages. The creditors include contractors, performers, vendors and advertising agencies.

In addition. State's Attorney T. Edward Austin said "stacks" of worthless checks allegedly written by Abbott have been turned over to his office for investigation. He said they totaled about $5000 but no action is planned pending outcome of the FBI probe. The Amazing Kreskin said Abbott picked him up at the airport before his performance and bragged, among other things, that he carried a gun in a shoulder holster.

Part of the FBI investigation involves the question of how Abbott, with a criminal record in Massachusetts, was able to obtain two gun permits in Jacksonville. "Although we were constantly reminded of the gun, I found the man to be rather likable and interesting," Kreskin said. was. i liiiifr i mr- 1 staged an orderly civil rights march in Washington. D.C.

Connolly Globe Staff JACKSONVILLE. Fla. The Amazing Kreskin. a nightclub entertainer who specializes in extrasensory perception, says he was no match for the amazing con man from Boston who currently uses the name Peter R. Abbott.

Abbott allegedly cheated The Amazing Kreskin out of a $5000 fee for a five-night appearance at Abbott's plush restaurant and lounge in July. "It might be Interesting for people to know that even a mentalist like myself can be bamboozled," Kreskin said of his experience with Abbott, whose list of creditors continued to grow here yesterday. Kreskin's agent. Lou Reda of Easton. said he and Kreskin have contacted "lawyer after lawyer," trying to collect the $5000.

"We wound up getting 'stiffed' by this guy (Abbott)." the agent said. Reda said that Abbott wrote a personal check, stopped payment and promised to send another check. Abbott hasn't been available for comment. Abbott's former restaurant on Phyllip's Highway in Jacksonville is the focal point of an FBI investigation. Abbott, working with the US Justice Department, claims to have bribed a number of officials, including a loan officer from the Small Business Administration (SBA).

The restaurant became a leading night spot in Jacksonville as Abbott booked nationally known musical groups and other entertainers. Financial problems mounted and Abbott closed the place Aug. 16. Kreskin. who is from West Caldwell. N.J., changed his name from George Kresge to T. (for The) A. (for Amazing) Kreskin.

He estimates that he has assisted 70 or so law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations, including the Hillside Strangler case in California and the "Son of Sam" murder probe in New York City. He was quoted in Jacksonville yesierday as saying he had been suspicious of Abbott from the beginning but not enough to pick up his usual 50 percent of the fee in advance. Abbott, 36, was known in Boston as Peter R.
