The unranked Huskies, 11-point underdogs, clinched the Pacific-lO Conference title with a 5-1 league mark. Washington is 8s2 overall. The loss ended a 28-game undefeated streak for the Trojans, who dropped to 7-1-1 overall.

Southern Cal is 4-1-1 in Pac-10 play, but is one of five conference teams ineligible for the conference crown because of a one-year sanction for academic irregularities. The opportunistic Washington defense forced eight turnovers. Washington's victory overshadowed a fine performance by Southern Cal tailback Marcus Allen, who rushed for 216 yards on 30 carries and also completed a 36-yard scoring pass to Jeff Simmons for the Trojans' only touchdown. BAYLOR 16, RICE 6 Walter Abercrombie scored on the second play of the game and Robert Bledsoe kicked field goals of 43, 24 and 33 yards as 12th-ranked Baylor defeated Rice, 16-6, in Houston, clinching the Southwest Conference title and a berth in the Cotton Bowl. Baylor clinched its second title in seven years with a 7-0 SWC record and moved within one game of the first unbeaten SWC season in the school's history.

Missouri (7-3) accepted a Liberty Bowl berth against Purdue.

He also threw his 39th TD pass of the year, tying the NCAA mark set by San Diego State's Dennis Shaw in 1969.

Easley's scoring runs of 7 and 3 yards and a 7-yard TD pass from Oliver Luck to Mickey Walczak gave the Mountaineers a 21-7 halftime lead. By Neil Singelais Globe Staff WORCESTER Villanova's strong defense converted three errant Holy Cross passes into touchdowns, and the Wildcats proceeded to crush the Crusaders, 45-13, yesterday, before a chilled gathering of 5135 at Fit-ton Field. It marked the fifth straight time that Villanova has whipped Holy Cross.

The game statistics tell it all. Holy Cross was guilty of eight turnovers, while Villanova had none. In the fumble department. Holy Cross turned the ball over three times, and Villanova never coughed up. Victimized by the Villanova secondary was Holy Cross quarterback Dave Boisture, who saw Wildcat defenders pick off five of his passes, including a spectacular interception by sophomore Chris Yurkow, who returned the ball 96 yards a school record for a touchdown in the third period.

That hiked Villanova's advantage to 31-7 and put the game out of sight. Villanova's first score was an indication of things to come. In his haste to dump off the ball while being tackled. Boisture had his pass intercepted by Villanova middle guard Joe Ma- koia at the Wildcat 59. Villanova then took off on a six-play 61 -yard march, highlighted by a pass from Pat O'Brien to wide receiver Willie Sydnor, good for 16 yards to the Crusaders' 45.

O'Brien then scampered 10 yards before lateraling to Greg Bedesem. who gained another 11 yards before being brought down at the 19. Three plays later, O'Brien went over on a keeper from the 7. Holy Cross finally broke into the scoring column as Boisture began to hit his targets with regularity. The 6-foot, 185-pound junior from Franklin completed five passes, three to North Attleboro's Mike Redding, for a total of 55 yards.

Mark Covington, who gained 95 yards in 19 carries, capped the sequence with a 7-yard sprint. That left the Cross trailing. 17-7. But Villanova closed out the half with halfback Shawn Passman cracking up the middle for 4 yards to pay-djt. The touchdown was set up by Syndor's spectacular leaping catch of a 42-yard O'Brien floater to the Cross 5.

The Wildcats went into the dressing room at intermission with a comfortable 24-7 lead. Yurkow's long interception return in the third period broke the backs of the Crusaders, and the rest of the scoring was academic.
