Soath Boston-X-Htorr an. French Soof Hooae. 11 I 111 FIVE MEN KILLED By tbe Collision of Trains Near WiJiinuntic, Conn. A Freight Conductor to Blame For the Accident. Two lupines Wrecked All the Victims Employes.

A. serious railroad accident occurred at Wilil-mantic. last night, in which five employes of the New York aud New England railroad were killed. It appears tbat tbe passenger train from Hartford to Willi-mautic, which was due at the last named place at 8.35 p. was late.

An extra freiebt train, made np of empty dirt cars, instead of awaiting arrival of tbe passenger train at Willimantic, drew out in the face of the passenger train, which is numbered fifty. When three miles south of Willimantic, the two trains came together with terrific violence. Tbe engines were baaiy smashed. and Walter Korsaitu. engineer, and Michael Hur lev, fireman of the extra train, were instantly killed.

Charles P. Kenyon. engineer, and Thomas Flood, fireman of the passenger train also suffered death. U. C.

Aldrich, conductor of the freight train, who wis riding upon the locomotive, was injured fatally, and died a few hours after the accident. Fortunately there were very few passencers on train 60, and only one was injured, and that being a simple cut in the bead. The cause, of the acci dent at present lies with tbe freight conductor. who, pulled out in the face of the passenger train, when he should have waited until it had arrived at "Willimantic. The roll ing stock.

anart from the engines. is but little injured, the baggage car being smashed at one end, the dirt cars derailed, and one set of trucks oil. The freight conductor bad been in the emulov of the road uine years. At 11 o'cIock the road was completely blocked, no trains having passed in either direction. The Washington express for Boston went through this morning via Air Line road from New Haven.

A wrecking train is at work, and tbe road will lie cleared by noon tor trains bound east and west which are now waiting at either side of the wreck. Tne engineer of the passenger train, Charles Kenyon ot Hartford, was aued thirty and leaves a wile. The fireman was Ihonias rlood, single man, also of Hartford. Walter Korsaitb was of Tutnam, and Michael Hurley was of Bos ton. Conductor H.

C. Aldrich belonged in Hart ford, and leaves no family. Conductor Aldrich' Fatal Mistake. It appears that the freight reached Willimantic at 8.34 p. or a minute before the No.

50 regu lar accommodation train from Hartford to Willimantic was due. Conductor Aldricb's orders were to draw off on to a tiding at this point and await toe arrival ana passage or tue passenger train lust ad of doing this, however, after regis tering tns arrival at tue station, and oerore tne station agent or other of the railroad employes were aware or nis intention, ne started on, apparently oblivious of tbe fact tne passenger train must tie close at nana, me latter Dad been delayed a few minutes at Vernon, where connec tion with tbe Eockville branch is made, and it was not until the freight train bad gone tbree miles beyond tbat tbe two trains met. The passenger train was moving at the time at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour and the freight about fifteen. The passenger train consisted of one baggage and passengercar and had on lioard about thirty passengers, one of whom only a gentleman from New London, in the baggage car at the time was injured. Conductor Stone was in charge of the train and was running a little faster than usual, to make op ie time lost at Vernon.

Tbe shock of the collision threw the baggage car from tbe rails, tore off its forward end', and left it standing nearly at right angles across the track. Further than a severe shaking up and some slight bruises, the pnssengers in the rear escaped' tin armed, and the car itself was left uninjured on the track. As soon after tbe collision as possible word was sent to Willimantic. A special relief train was sent out, and the four bodies and tne injured conductor taken back. Telegrams were immediately despatched to the friends of tbe unfortunate men, and, this morning, upon their arrival, preparations for tne removal of the bodies to their respective homes were made.

The to tbe Road will be not far from 10,000, though as yet. its exact amount cannot be accurately determined. Tbe strangest part of the whole affair is the action of Conductor Aldrich in running out of Willimantic on tne passenger train's time, and it can only be accounted for by forgetiulness ou his part, ie had been in the employ of the company tor nine years, had frequently been in chaigeof special freight trains, and was considered one of the most faithful coudtietors, whence it was something remarkable that he should have made toe fatal error. Especially was it it is known that he registered his arrival at Willimantic, in accordance with the rules of the road. These registers are intended to prevent just such accidents as this, and from them conductors can learn what trains are ahead of them going or coining, and are exected to govern themselves accordingly.

Vpon tbe arrival of tbe freight train last night Conductor Aldrich found the witch set for the eutrance of the passenger train, and deliSerately came down from bis engine, went forward aud changed it so as to ailow bis own train to push out ou the main track and go ahead, a fact which cle.irly indicates that be bad forgotten the approaching train. The New York stock eichange, aided by tbe action of the postmaster? geuerai, effectually broke up the combination system of tbe put-and-caJI brokers, but a new and ingenious system of stock swindling bus been devised. The new system consists in the pseudo organization of a "inuttul stock operating company," care being taken not to perfect a real organization. The capital is limited, and each person sending $5 or J10 becomes a stockholder, and is entitled to a vote. The insile inauagers. however, bare sufficient proxies to carry any measure they desire.

Subscribers are permitted to examine the books, lint no information can be gained from them. Tbe stock is payable on demand, and monthly dividends are declared. When enourh money is secured the management step out. Of course dividends are paid out from the deposits as no investments are made by the management. Some stock holders have received back I'OO but tbe management can afford this to a few, by paying ten per cent, to a hundred, and nothing to the remaining thousands.
