"As 'Man from Maine' he became quite famous, or at least we all thought he was," said his daughter Marge Cook. "He loved it, but he was sort of a ham." Mr. Wall who died at Togus Hospital, was distinctly a native Mainer, she said a descendant of many generations in Tenants Harbor, where at least seven generations have lived in the family's woodframe home.

He was tall, with "bold" features, and continually involved in the affairs of the small coastal Maine town, where he was a jack-of-all-trades. A memorial service will be held next Sunday at Ridge Baptist Church in Tenants Harbor. "He and Andy (Wyeth) had a very special friendship, but he never liked people trying to get through to Andy through him," said his daughter. Mr. Wall was also featured on the cover of Wyeth's book titled "Wyeth People." A self-taught botanical expert, Mr.

Wall was the "Johnny Appleseed of Tenants Harbor," she said. "He used to plant a tree when each grandchild was born," said Mrs. Cook. The family has eight grandchildren and 17 great- she said. "He learned Latin just because he loved growing things so much." Mr.

Wall, a carpenter by trade, taught school at Long Cove and was the area's first certified tree farmer. He also served several terms as town selectman, was town moderator, constable and school board trustee. "He was such a versatile, interesting person," said Mrs. Cook. "He was interested in psychology, the holistic thinking of the mind and body working together." Anne M.
