Bud Savage, a graduate of the second class, is 76 and lives at the Truman House in East Cambridge. He said he is a combination security observer and entertainer. Everybody says its a great idea. We provide our own security and it brings the people closer together. But the best part is I play the piano for the residents and get them to sing along, said Savage, who spent 8W years playing piano at the Old Boston Club Park Square three nights a week as a side job.

Joseph S. Daly, spokesmen for the Cambridge Housing Authority, said the program has worked out great. Last month two of the elderly guards spotted two men taking a TV out of the building. Instead of yelling or chasing them, they simply picked up the phone and the men were arrested in the parking lot. Graduate Margaret Keating, 84, said, Im anxious to get to work and do the right thing.

At the graduation ceremony, Daly said told graduates: By keeping us informed of whats going on in the building, not only in security matters but in personal problems residents may have, you are providing your neighbors with a great service. By Edward Moran Special To The Globe Faced with a loss of security personnel in their apartment buildings, 22 Cambridge elderly and handicapped residents from housing units throughout the city were graduated yesterday from the Cambridge Police Academy as security officers. They are the third class to join the elderly and handicapped security force set up by the Cambridge Housing Authority with the Cambridge police in an effort to increase security in the seven elderly housing buildings in the city. There are now 72 in the force. There are fewer CETA positons available for security now, and the elderly become easy targets because of their age and physical condition.

We teach them to watch out for themselves," Capt. Lawrence J. Brutti of the Police Academy said During the week-long course, the residents are taught first aid, how to handle fire emergencies, roles of security personnel in crime prevention and the role of police in emergencies, he said. William OBrien, pastor of St. Williams Churcli in Leominster, and the Catholic Social Service Agency in New York to see if they could find his brother. People made calls for me, and they told me my brother would be coming in two weeks, Her said. Then two weeks would go by, and they said it would be soon, but he didnt come.

Last week, Her received a letter from his brother that explained what had happened. And, with Fr. OBrien's help, he contacted David Taylor of the Farmington, Ministerial which arranged for Xiongs trip to Boston. Im very glad theyre here now, Her said as photographers surrounded the family, to the curious looks of several hundred persons waiting to board a plane for San Francisco. I hope they like America as much as I do.

The brothers spent their first minutes together making introductions. Her introduced Xiong to his fiance, Barbara Cardinal, a senior at Leominster High School, who is literally the girl next door. And Xiong introduced Her to his wife and son, who was born in the refugee camp. My brother is very glad now that he has seen me, Her said. He didn't know what was happening to him before.

He said the people were nice to him but he wanted to see his relatives." In the next year, he said, he hopes the entire Yang family will be in Leominster. Still waiting for clearance at the refugee camp are his parents and another brother and sister. I think we can get them here soon, Her said. And then, finally, we can all be together. Murder of student shocks Hamilton Colorado investigators yesterday said they believe there is a link between the slaying of a Massachusetts woman and two previous murders in the Denver metropolitan area.

Police were working on a possible connection in the stabbing murder in Denver Thursday of 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski of 12 Porter lane, Hamilton. Pruszynski, a senior at Wheaton College, had worked for the past month as an intern in the news department of Denver radio station KHOW. Hamilton officials who knew Pruszynski when she was active in town and high school activities expressed shock over news of the fatal stabbing. Colorados Douglas County Corner John Andrews said the young woman died of multiple stab wounds. He said there was evidence she had been raped.

Her body was discovered Thursday morning on ranch land in Englewood, a community about 30 miles from Denver. Pruszynski had been given her first big assignment Monday, when she covered the killing of a Secret Service agent. KHOW news director Mike Anthony praised her work. Police said she left the radio station at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Denver.

Her normal routine was to board a bus for the 46-block ride to Englewood, then walk to the home of her grandparents, with whom she was staying. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Pruszynski of Hamilton, were on their way to Colorado yesterday. A funeral Mass will be said at 9 a.m.

Monday in St. Pauls Church in Hamilton. Besides her parents, she leaves a brother, Chester of Shrewsbury, N.J., and a sister, Janet Johnson of Groton, Conn. Isa Zimmerman, principal of the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, commented: Helene was a really beautiful person. Zimmerman added: The whole high school is in a state of shock; she was such a wonderful person, natural, warm and happy.

We just cannot believe such a thing happened. Hamilton Police Chief Robert Poole, a neighbor of the Pruszynski family, said: She was just about the happiest child and a sweetest little girl ever. He said the family had lived in the town about eight years, and that her father was an engineer with a Beverly firm. 12:00 Washington Week in Review 2 Hot Hero Sandwich 4-10 Candlepin Bowling 5 Shazam Weekend Special 9-12 Cut Home Heating Costs ..11 Hockey Night in Boston ....25 Wrestling 27 Abbott and Costello 38 Then Came Bronson 56 Sportswortd 68 12:30 Q.I. The meter has been running for more than 70 days. Each day American hostages are held in Iran, ABC Television News spends another $100,000 or so. The money is not recovered through advertising and is spent in addition to the normal costs of doing news business on a global scope. This is money ABC is either spending or losing by pre-empting programming for its late-night network newscast. ABC committed itself to daily special coverage of the Iranian crisis at the outset, thinking it might last only a few days.

We set out to cover the story better," said Roone Arledge, president of ABC News and Sports. We didnt expect to make money on it. Obviously we didnt expect it to go on this long. Before you start addressing your Care package to ABC, join us for a look at the bright side of the networks story. The smiles you see on the faces of ABCs executives arent all due to patriotic pride.

As it turns out, ABCs late-night news special airing at most stations on the feed from 11:30 to midnight has turned into one of the seasons hit shows. What ABC is losing now can probably be written off to program development. All indications are that theres a definite appetite for this kind of late-night format, ABC President Fred Pierce told a gathering of television writers. We will probably follow this up with some kind of regular late-night news or specials program. The use of the time slot for special coverage of news events has been a tradition of all three networks, but ABCs extended nightly use of it during the Iranian crisis has revealed a huge potential audience.

The program is being picked up by 185 stations. While ratings declined during the holidays, the broadcasts have been getting 30 to 32 shares, Pierce said. That means roughly one out of every three sets turned on in a given area at that time is tuned to the local ABC station. The ratings are higher than regular entertainment gets at that time, Pierce said. As the Iranian story drags on with less and less news breaking daily, ABC has started including coverage of other hot stories.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has led several shows since that story broke. The other night, ABC used the time to report on the death of George Meany. Arledge, whose promotion to chief of news as well as sports raised eyebrows a couple of years ago, has enjoyed tremendous success in getting his concept of network news World News Tonight a larger audience. He thinks the late-night special is bringing the early news even more viewers. Part of what these late-night shows are doing is showing a lot of people how well our news department is doing, he said.

ABC has not only become competitive in news, but in many cases we are doing a better job than our competitors. Sender to leave Evening Marty Sender, cohost of Channel 4s Evening since it started in April 1977, announced yesterday he will leave the show and WBZ-TV voluntarily in March. He will pursue other interests, probably as a news or documentary producer rather than an on-camera performer. Replacements will be auditioned starting immediately, a station official said. The shows original producer, Tom Houghton, resigned last summer, and cohost Robin Young has said she is exhausted and probably will leave when her contract expires some months from now.

Evening" airs five nights a week all year and is among the most grueling assignments in local TV. Ch. 5 plans late-night show WCVB-TV, Channel 5, has hired Matt Siegel, WBCN radio personality, as host of its live 5 All Night talk and entertainment show and former WBCN news analyst Danny Schechter as producer. The show is tentatively scheduled to air from 2 to 4 a.m. starting March 4.

Schechter was producer of "The Joe Oteri Show," an issues-oriented talk show on Channel 56, and Ch. 5 officials say they expect he will provide a lot of substantive material, some of it controversial."
