cm Baylor Publications Win National Awards THE WACO CITIZEN, TUESDAY, MAY 24, 1988, PAGE 3 Six Baylor University publications recently have been recognized as among the best in the nation by the Council for the Advancement of Education (CASE) and by the Baptist Public Relations Association (BPRA). Receiving the gold award for special from CASE was the October 1987 issue of the Baylor Line. Edited by Sherry Casteilo, who was assisted by Paula Tanner, the emphasis was on the Soviet Union. It contained articles written by five Baylor faculty who have traveled extensively throughout Russia and who teach courses related to the history, language or culture of that country. There were 108 entries in this category from institutions of higher education across America.

Receiving CASE silver awards were recruiting viewbook and search publications. Both were developed by Dr. Eugene W. Baker, executive assistant to the president and press secretary and by Bobby Schrade, director of school relations. Approximately 550 colleges and universities entered this category.

The viewbook also won first place among more than 100 institutions that participated in this part of the BPRA contest. new logo, a typographic design created by Spruiell and Company of Dallas, also received a first place BPRA award. The stationery that utilized the new logo earned a second place award. (1988) National Spanish Exam Results On Saturday, March 19, six University High School students took the National Spanish Exam at Baylor University. The National Spanish Exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In the Spanish Level 1 division, Regular Category, Patricia Puente won fourth place, and Sammy Arocha won fifth place.

Fatima Ortiz placed seventh in the Level 1, Special Category. Patricia, Sammy and Fatima received Certificates of merit for their high scores on the exam. In the Spanish, Level II, Special Category, Maria Delgado won first place with the perfect score of 80. Maria was awarded a bronze medal for in In the same Category, Vila Martinez won third place, and she too received an in bronze medal. Lupe Escobedo placed second in the Level III, Special Category, and received a bronze medal also.

WISD Bus Drivers Revolt By CAMELIA FOSTER Sixty-three bus drivers out of the 122 employed by the Waco Independent School District did not show up for work Monday morning. The district runs 122 routes, according to Jim Mansfield, Director of Transportation Services. is a lot of unrest and they are apparently trying to make a statement about the action of the board of Thursday Mansfield said. The drivers are upset about the board hiring Durham Transportation Services, a firm with state headquarters in Round Rock to run the bus service for the district. Drivers held a meeting last week and were on hand Thursday night for the regular meeting of the WISD Board of Trustees to express their grievances on the contracting of the services.

Drivers last week are worried they will lose their teacher retirement, their sick leave and they resent the busing being sold according to statements made when they met last Tuesday. Memorial Weekend, Sunday, May 29, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Education Commissioner Appoints Luce To Committee Texas Commission of Education, W.N. Kirby, has appointed Dr. Wilbur Luce, principal of Waco High School, to the State Advisory Committee on College Testing and the Public Schools.

The Texas Legislature passed a law requiring all entering students beginning in the fall of 1989, to take a basic skills test in reading, writing, and mathematics. This committee will develop the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) test. The committee will be charged with examining the impact on the public schools of the TASP test. Legislation requires the results of the TASP test, student grade point averages, and success in college remediation courses to be reported to high schools. The first meeting of the committee will be this month with work continuing throughout the 1988-89 school year.
