A storm and cloudburst swept over a vast portion of this part of the state, and in its track left a sea of desolation, sweeping everything before it. Many lives have been lost. Herds of cattle, horses and every living thing within its awful track, with small exceptions, was swallowed up in less time than it requires to write its history. At about the hour of 7 o'clock last evening, there appeared in the southwest a hea.vy and angry-looking cloud, which passed to the northwest of this place. A continuous blaze of lightning and awful peals of thunder made the icene fearfully grand.

There was no cessation of the threatenings of the storm, when at about 1 a the awful Niagara had culminated to more than its own capacity to contain, and in an instant its fury was turned loose, and like a pent up demon, it swooped down with the energy of a raging billow and spread death and ruin in its track. Editor Press: The Saline county Journal, of the 23d, contains an editorial in reference to the adventure the County Commissioners of this count)-, had last week with the Galva baby. Sampson is always funny, and subject to gres.t flights of imagination, and in this instance has fairly outdone himself. As the article reflects upon the integrity of the Board, and shows unjustice to the lady who cared for the helpless child.

I deem it proper to offer a correction. The Commissioners did not go back 011 their contract with Mrs. Hodges, but had allowed her bill in full the day before she came (with the child) before the board- The trouble was not over the allowance of the bill at all, which, as I said before, was allowed without a word. The Board by an order, had direct ed Mrs. Hodges to turn the child over to the matron of the poor farm who wanted it and agreed to keep it at $3 per week, which the former lady re-iused to do I suppose that Mrs.

Hodges had become attached to the baby and did not like to give it up, at any rate, she talked cross to the Board, called us cruel and etc. It is a fact, that one of our number was "trapped" into taking the child in his arms, when the lady said: "now you have got your baby make the most of it," or words to that effect; but after enjoying the siturtion for a while, agreed to take the child to the poor farm, which she did. It is not my business to defend Mrs. Hodges but I must say that it is not iair to speak of her as a "wet nurse," for, as I understand it, she took the baby out of the gutter, where it had been thrown to die by the unhuman outfit who are responsiable for its ex-istance, and kindly cared for it when no one else woiW. The Board was sorry indeed to take the child away from Mrs.

Hodges, and did so only as a matter of economy. Sampson in order to say something sunny about our county, his li tale. Then he proceeded to steal another team near there, and started on a stealing trading expedition through Rice, Reno and vicinity.

It is believed that he stole at least one horse iu Reno, and one in northwestern Rice. A few weeks previous to his starting off on his "tour" he had abducted a daughter of John Wall, ot Bulls City Mitchell county, and a letter was intercepted by Sheriff McGrath that led him to believe that the girl was with her brother who lives 10 miles northwest of Brookville, in Ellsworth county, and that he, (Mike Young) would soon attempt to visit her. BRYAN SOOKINH a few days, last Saturday afternoon a little boy came to the house and asked th girl to come to the woods near by "an old friend would like to see her." The Sheriff at once mistrusted who it was and quietly remarked that "no gentleman would ask a lady away frm the house in that manner," and Mrs. Wall sent word by the boy that "Mattie" could not go. A few moments more and the Sheriff saw riding to the house the man he was after. The thief as he reached the house caught sight of the stranger and eyed him suspiciously, finially alighting, keeping the horse between him and the house, at first. The girl "Mattie" fainted about 40 feet from the house and as Young went to her assistance the Sheriff saw his opportunity and called for his surrender.

Young answered by drawing his revolver but the Sheriff already had his, "drawn to the bead" and firing, the bullet took effect over Youngs left eye passing to the back of the "brain, killing him instantly.
