TAKES LEAVE OF ABSENCE i GABRIEL HEATTER Gabriel Heatter, for four years master of ceremonies on "We, the People," takes his first leave of absence from the program beginning with the broadcast of Tuesday, June 3. (9 to 9.30 p. m) A substitute master of ceremonies for "We, the People" during Heatter's leave has not been selected as yet. Heatter is a native of New York City's lower East Side where he received his early schooling. While still in high school he obtained his first job as a copy boy on a Brooklyn newspaper.

After graduation he worked fora period as a reporter on the Brooklyn Times. Later he attended the New York University Law School but dropped these studies to return to the newspaper business. He worked on the New York Journal and the New York Herald and was a correspondent in Paris before he turned to radio early in the 1930's as a news analyst. m. The programs will be heard over the coast to coast facilities of CBS in this country and in Latin America. The series is to be supervised by CBS Director of International broadcasts, Paul White. The new series, primarily musical, is designed to give the peoples of the Western Hemisphere a 30 minute picture each week of the artistic and cultural life of Latin American countries. Originating in a different major capital each Saturday, the programs will feature native music, includ ing folk songs and dances.

Prominent public leaders are also to be heard in brief talks. The first broadcast will come from Buenos Aires, with the cooperation of Radio Belgrano. Future programs will originate in Havana, Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Mexico City, Caracas, Rio de Janiero and other important capitals. The running commentary will be in English for listeners in this country; for dialers in Latin America it will be in Spanish. The opening program which corns one day before Argentina celebrates Independence Day, will include patriotic Argentine airs.

The Francisco Canaro Tipica, iFrancisco Balaguer and Robert Firpo orchestra are to be heard on this broadcast with vocalists Agustin Irustra and Nelly Omar. 6.30 HBG 6.45 HBG Paul White PRESIDENT SPEAKS TUESDAY President Roosevelt will make a Fireside Chat from the White House Tuesday, and his remarks will be carried to the four corners of the globe over the facilities of the Columbia Broadcasting System. Locally the broadcast will be heard on WHP, 10.30 to 11.00 p. m. A unique feature of this Fireside Chat is that mem ters of the Lan American Diplomatic Corps will be present in the Diplomatic Reception Room in the White House from which the President will make his talk.

First, Direcor Brewster Morgan will point out the original heeds which brought into existance such agencies as the NYA, the CCC, the Federal Committee on Apprenticeship and the Vocational Training Department of the United States Office of Education. The program also will show what the government was doing with these agencies before the start of World War II, and then describe how their work is being speeded to provide defense workers.

The "Report" originates in the studios of WJSV, Columbia's station for the Nation's capital. Narrators are "John Charles Daiy and Albert Warner. NEW CAST MEMBERS JOAN BANKS Joan Banks, a native New Yorker, and Helen Shields, who was born in British Honduras, have been added to the cast of "The O'Neills serial drama broadcast on WHP and the Colum bia network Mondays through Fridays, 5.30 to 5.45 p. m. Miss Banks plays the part of Peggy O'Neill Kayden, and Miss Shields has the role of Eileen Turner.

Miss Banks is the wife of actor Frank Lovejoy, and Miss Shields is married to John Boruff, playwright and actor. Joan displayed talent as a dan cer when she was a little girl and studied with a school of Russian ballet. During her high school days she won acclaim as a swimmer. Once she received a prize from Gertrude Ederle, first girl to swim the English Channel. When she was 18 years old Joan made her radio debut with Walter O'Keefe.

That was in 1936, and Miss Banks has grown increasingly important as a radio actress ever since. Miss Shields also made her microphone bow at the age of 18 in Washington. She left radio for a brief period to join a Washington stock company. It was while playing in a New York production of "Washington Jitters" that Miss Shields met John Boruff. They were married on June 23, 1938..
