'Martha Webster' Characters Show Perfect Type casting' Not by chance should a great part of the success which the WHP daytime serial "Martha Webster," enjoyed since its air aeDut in January or tms vear be wrm ascribed to the technique of type casting employed ty the director, for each of the experienced actors resembles in age and appearance the character he portrays on the air. This method of casting lends to a deeper understanding of a role bv the player and inspires him to inject more of his own per sonality into the portrayal.

Being of a genteel smalltown family she was educated but experienced only in the art of home making. It was natural that Bess Flynn, the author of the serial, should play the part of Martha, for Bess is grey haired, forty, and before taking up her duties of marriage, and motherhood had been an actress. Into the employment agency where Martha was registered came Alvin Craig, an impulsive, 40 odd year old father of four motherless children, to engage a housekeeper for his unruly family.

To portray the sole parent in the Craig home, the well know Ray Collins was chosen. Kay Collins, one of radio's most versatile actors, is heard as Alvin Craig in the "Martha Webster" serial. Collins has played many types of roles in radio but says the Craig character is so human that he remains "just himself." Collins is a father in real life and interprets his radio role with a sympathetic but colorful reality. Martha Webster entered the Craig household to meet Winfield, the oldest child in his early twenties, beautiful 18 year old Virginia, 15 year old Dick and 10 year old Lucy. Each of the juvenile actors portraying the Craig children gives genuine personality to his radio role, for in each instance the player was cast with the aid of the author's judgement to real life characteristics fitting the script personalities.

All script problems are natural, for they are to use the abused cliche of daytime radio true to life. Then there is Wilbur, the lovable, big hearted, middle aged bachelor who lives next door to the Craigs. His stumbling phrases give a homely humor which is universally appreciated. Played by Ralph Dumke, the accomplished actor of "Sisters of the Skillet" fame, Wilbur indeed exists. As to the story itself, the sincerity is unquestioned.

Written, as it is, about a motherless home, by an author who was orphaned at an early age, the sequences follow the tenderness and humor that abound in an environment of love and loyalty to family. As the children grow older, author Bess Flynn has charted their lives for the next two years, using the experiences ot her own lively children for material but temper ing the action with the memory of her own motherless yearnings throughout those same years. "Martha Webster" is broadcast over the WHP CBS network, Mondays through Fridays, 11.15 to 11.30 a. m..
