Thirty-one 7 Tf WILKES-BARRE RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY-3, 1962 Concert assoonist tf Ren, rhmm V4 Hia ar Ma It Wilkat-Barra Board WYOMING 3 tBorouglisr Faculties Faculty members of Exeter, Wed WyOrouij and Wjwroinj 'f School met yesterday in the first jdI a series, of in-traininp programs at Wyoming Memorial, High School. Mulherne, Margaret Wallace, i Programs are designed to Im- prove the Instructional technique through, professional discussions. Speakers were PrpL Stephen Budash, Kitg's College, and George. Ralston, dean of Wilkes Freida Dolby, reading expert and consultant for Lyons and Carnahan Publishing Company, conducted a fifth-grade class in a reading demonstration. Guidance is not a subject Prof.

Budash stated in his talk, it is a service not everyone can or should give. However, he said all teachers can be guidance minded. Only new thing about guidance, he elaborated, is it has become systematized. Object of is the consideration of tnevwnoie man; -tftereiore, all aspects of the individual must be developed, ha-said. "You're working with a human being, you cannot reject him for his limitations," Budash stated.

Every child is different, he added, i and must be handled differently. Ralston discussed "What Do Colleges Expect of High School Students?" With standards for admission to colleges rising constantly, today's teacher must keep in mind what attitudes his student must develop to succeed, 'he declared. One of the basic reauirempnht. Ralston said, was a command of fundamental principles: reading, writing, and arithmetic, accompanied by the facility for abstract thinking. Students a 1 to must have an awareness of not only where they are going, but where they are now, Ralston added.

Concerning reasoning ability, tomorrow's college student must be able to put facts together and reach, a logical conclusion with a flexible inquiring mind and an Impersonal approach, Ralston stated. "Perhaps what is most impor tant," he said, "is the student's having a purpose. College cannot hold just the promise of security and a a year job, he advised. Concluding, Ralston asked the teachers to give the individual an opportunity to work on, his own. Less individual attention and more individual effort the answer, he explained.

Freida Dolby demonstrated a new tecnnique teacmng reading in which two readers with the same stories but slightly different vocabularies were used. In this way, she explained, one half of the class can be giv more challenging work while not disrupting the curriculum. books contained content area from all fields so the child gains reading skills needed for other subjects, she stated. Program was arranged by su pervising principals, John Campbell, Exeter; Gilbert Perry, West Wyoming, and Gail B. Young, Wyoming." i Present; Mary S.
