Sunday, July 21, 1991 The Paducah Sun 9B Festival concert honors Wheeler, songs of river dance club. He formed a pop country group at 17 and played regionally, and formed his still-active dance band in 1968. His was the backup band on the TV-6 telethon from 19G6-1982. Steele writes songs as a hobby, The Paducah Symphony's Summer Festival Pops Concert Saturday night will feature a work containing a number of "roustabout" songs collected from the old packet boat and steamboat days by the late Paducahan Mary Wheeler. During her lifetime (1892-1979), Miss Wheeler gained national recognition for her compilation and publication of Appalachian folk tunes and river songs.

The symphony's 8 p.m. concert, on the final night of the 25th Summer Festival, will feature many well-known popular songs, but the symphony will take time to remember Miss Wheeler through a work specially arranged by retired Murray State University music professor Paul W. Shahan. In the middle of the work, Dan Steele, operations and program manager of WPSD-TV, will provide a brief narration about the river songs, and will sing two tunes, accompanying himself on guitar. Music and singing were consuming interests of Miss Wheeler, one of three daughters and a son of 1st District Congressman Charles Wheeler.

She began studying voice in1 earnest in New York City and then in Chicago. When World War I broke out, she requested overseas duty with the Red Cross. Sent to she was assigned to an entertainment unit in the province of Lorraine. Upon returning to the United States, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She toured Appalachia and became engrossed in the music of mountain people, i i mo 31 9161 Hlskltvllll Rd.

"The affectionate and congenial task of Mary Wheeler has been to rescue from gathering oblivion an adequate collection of this typical music." Three of Miss Wheeler's nieces, Bertha W. Wenzel, Jane W. Myre and Mary W. Hillard, commissioned Shahan to harmonize and orchestrate 10 tunes for the Paducah Symphony, in memory of Miss Wheeler.

Shahan gave his arrangement the name "Steamboatin' Days," and drew the 10 tunes from a collection of 119 tunes published under the same name by the Louisiana State University Press in 1944. Shahan has long been composing and orchestrating music for special occasions. Notable among his works are "The Stubblefield Story," a folk-opera based on information that Murray's Nathan B. Stubblefield invented radio; "Music for the 50th Anniversary of Murray State University," plus original compositions for the inaugurations of three MSU presidents, and two large works commemorating the nation's bicentennial. His "Beat the Drums Proudly" was commissioned by the Jackson Purchase Historical Society and "The Land and the Rivers" was commissioned by the Paducah-McCracken County Bicentennial Committee.

Shahan has also composed anthems for special church dedications and authored books on music theory. His first published work, "Spectrums," was awarded the International Thor Johnson Award for Brass He won the 15161 HlnklevlllB Rd. 444-tJ11l 'it's SISIHInUevllliRd. 444 UMU BOMB H.B SWB WOH ft ESSm and he composed the music for the promotion "WPSD Cares About You," which is also used in various forms on station newscasts.
