will go on the air with a low-power television station July 1. The station, W4CBE, Channel 46, will concentrate on coverage of local news and events. Besides its broadcast signal, the station can be seen on Murray Cablevision channel 46. On the TV station, Shuffett will anchor a 30-minute newscast at 4 Shuffett has a lengthy broadcasting resume. He and partner Pete Hulse bought WNBS-AM here in 1957 and started WAAW-FM in the mid-60s before selling the stations in 1975.

With Ed Fritz of Paducah, they repurchased the stations in 1987. The following year they sold WAAW and Shuffett bought out his partners and became sole owner of Murray Broadcasting. Shuffett anchored newscasts for 18 years and from 1975 to 1987 concentrated on the restaurant and automotive businesses he owned. A former news director for a Lexing- until 6 p.m. "I've always been news oriented," Shuffett said.

"I think low power TV is uniquely suited to news and local events. We feel as far as what's on the screen, our newscast will be comparable to anybody's, but the subject matter will be of a local nature. "Since our broadcast area is Calloway County, we feel that's what we should cover. But somethings like the Butch Burnette trial, the restructuring of the state school system we'll cover that." Besides coverage of local events, W4GBE will be an affiliate of two networks, Family Net, which features old movies and sports, and Hit Video U.S.A., which broadcasts music and interviews with musicians and entertainers. The cable TV connection is "essential" to Ch. 46's survival, Shuffett said.

He pointed to Paducah, where low-power Ch. 54 has been struggling financially because Comcast has refused to put its signal on the cable network. Shuffett praised Murray Cablevision and manager Burnette Ferguson for "dedication to the people of Murray. They realize the significance of a local TV station." The new station doesn't mean many new jobs for the community as employees of WNBS also will work for the TV station, Shuffett said. David Dowdy has joined Murray Broadcasting as director of operations for the TV station.
