Rose credited Willis' leadership, a professional faculty and involved parents for the success of the middle school. "It's just one of those rare situations where all of the ingredients are coming together to make for a real exciting environment," Rose said.

In other matters, school officials have decided not to phase out the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Calloway County High School. Rose said the school board allowed school officials to look into phasing out the program because of declining enrollment, but Rose recommended Thursday that the program be salvaged. About 60 students are enrolled this year. "We feel we may be able to do some things at the middle school that will help us to enhance the program," he said. "We really feel it is a viable program that provides a lot of leadership opportunities to the students The board is very anxious to keep it, too." Get In While The Getting Is Good! The Calloway County school system has spent $12,500 to buy more than $100,000 worth of television equipment once used at the now-defunct low-power television station WNBS-Channel 46. School Superintendent Jack Rose said Larry England, a high school speech teacher, informed the school board of the purchase during a meeting Thursday. The equipment will be used in the Calloway County High School TV studio. "We were extremely pleased with the purchase," Rose said. In addition, Calloway County Middle School has received $250,000 worth of Apple computer equipment as a pilot school in the National Alliance for Restructuring Education.

The middle school was one of three Kentucky schools selected along with the state Department of Education to join a national pilot project to stimulate the spread of educational reform. The Apple equipment is only the start of the substantial amount of money, equipment and consulting services the school is to receive through the project. Rose said consultants from the University of Pittsburgh have been working with school officials, teachers have begun some training, and middle school Principal Marilyn Willis has traveled to New York for other training. If the project is successful, the pilot schools will mentor other Kentucky schools next year. In a separate matter, the middle school has been selected as one of seven schools to represent Kentucky in the U.S.

Office of Education's Secondary Blue Ribbon Schools Recognition program. Rose said the school is the only middle school in the state selected. The school was recognized for a variety of accomplishments including high academic achievement and attendance rate and its low dropout rate.
