B4 WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 20. 2017 MONTREAL GAZETTE Jays' Tepera gives up MLB record homer jtrm TIBOR ILLYESMTI VIA THE ASSOCIATED PRESS EYE ON QUALIFYING Hungary goalie Barbara Biro watches the ball during a women's soccer world championship qualifying match against Denmark in Gyor, Hungary, on Tuesday. The Danes won handily, 6-1. Kansas City's Alex Gordon hit Major League Baseball's record home run of 2017, breaking the season mark Gordon's home run off Toronto's Ryan Tepera on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre raised the total to one more than the 5,693 home runs hit in 2000 at the height of the Steroids Era.

The record was broken with just less than two weeks remaining in the regular season. There were 5,610 homers last year, an average of 2.31 per game, and this year's average of 2.53 entering Tuesday's action projects to 6,139. That would be up 47 per cent from the 4,186 homers hit in 2014. Power subsided after the start of drug testingwith penalties in 2004. The home run average dropped in 2014 to its lowest level since 1992, then started rising during the second half of the 2015 season.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton had 55 homers entering Tuesday, and needs six in the final 12 games to match Roger Maris' hallowed 1961 total of 61. The most prodigious, prolific home-run hitter in the major leagues might also be the streakiest. His latest homer snapped a 9-for-62 slump Before that, he hit 18 homers in a 25-game span with a batting average of .387 and an OPS of 1.489. Some consider Stanton the front-runner in the National League race for most valuable player. But Marlins manager Don Mattingly doesn't even consider him the team MVP, giving the edge to all-star left fielder Marcell Ozuna because he has been more consistent.

Ozuna has hit at least .295 with at least 18 RBI in every full month this season. Stanton's monthly average has ranged from .242 in June to .349 in August. He entered Tuesday's game against the Mets hitting .190 in September. Stanton's homer total is the highest since Ryan Howard hit 58 in 2006. The Associated Press Predators choose Josi as new captain The Nashville Predators have named defenceman Roman Josi as the eighth captain in the franchise's history, replacing Mike Fisher, who retired last month.

Defenceman Ryan Ellis, recovering from off-season surgery, is the associate captain. Defence-man Mattias Ekholm, forward Filip Forsberg and centre Ryan Johansen are all alternate captains. Josi, 27, is the second player from Switzerland to be a captain in the NHL. Mark Streit was named captain of the New York Islanders in 2011. Blues forward Sanford out up to six months St.

Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford will have surgery and miss 5-6 months of action after dislocating his left shoulder dur NEWSMAKERS Devils' Boyle will play while battling cancer New Jersey Devils forward Brian Boyle has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone-marrow cancer the team's doctor said can largely be treated with medication. Boyle has been away from the team during training camp while getting diagnosed. Boyle, who played last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs and whose wife, Lauren, had a baby girl in May, said he felt mostly fatigued but chalked it up to life events. General manager Ray Shero said the cancer was discovered in blood work during the Devils' team physicals at the start of camp. The 32-year-old signed a two-year deal with New Jersey in July.

ing training camp. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced the injury Tuesday. He also said defenceman Jay Bouw-meester has a left ankle fracture and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. The 22-year-old Sanford joined St. Louis in February after a trade with Washington.

The forward had two goals and three assists in 13 regular-season appearances for the Blues, and he also played in four playoff games. Phelps doesn't plan to compete in pool again Michael Phelps says he has "no desire" to return to competitive swimming, but he's eager to stay involved with the sport and cheer on those who follow in his enormous wake. He's attended a couple of swim meets since winning five golds and a silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but says "they truly didn't kick anything off or spike any more interest in coming out of retirement again." Phelps said he's excited about the birth of his second child and numerous opportunities away from the pool. His wife, Nicole, is about four months pregnant. The couple already has a 16-month-old son, Boomer.

FIFA has big hopes for Women's World Cup FIFA president Gianni Infantino wants the next Women's World Cup to draw one billion TV viewers across the world. Infantino, who attended the official launch of the 2019 tournament in France, said Tuesday the previous edition in Canada in 2015 was watched by 750 million viewers. The tournament will gather 24 teams in six groups. "It will be magnificent," Infantino said. "France is a great football nation for both men and women."
