1981 tastem Ak Lr.es. ire' By M. CEU CIRNE Sto Wrltw found the' bridge's truss "suspect" during a recent routine inspection, Quinn said. Quinn said the bridge is safe. He said PennDOT will continue to maintain it until 1983, when the structure is scheduled to be replaced.

The department has received $32, -000 to begin the preliminary design of the new structure, he said. But residents are fearful of the bridge's safety. They want it repaired. "I think they're waiting for something to Mary Wanat of 849 Coxton Road, "then they're going to do something about it." Her husband Peter said he is worried emergency vehicles will have to travel the bridge in violation of the weight limit. Esther Shupp, 28, of 851 Coxton said the bridge's uneven deck could damage cars.

terrible," she said, "there's a big dip, at both ends of the bridge. -The other day I thought I was going to lose half of my car "It looks worse now than before," said Diane Klink, 34, of 886 Coxton. Rd. "I can't tell how bad the bridge is in terms of structure, but the road is worse." "I think the bridge is said Joseph Nardone, "but it doesn't look too good." Nardone is the general su-. perintendent of ihe Lower Lackawanna Valley Sanitary Authority.

Richard Paulson, plant manager of the Potlatch Corporation in Ransom, says the aging bridge affects production at the Potlatch plant. He said the paper products firm has a warehouse on Coxton Road and another one in Laflin. Its trucks, which weigh an average of 16 tons, shuttle products and waste materials over the bridge. He said the firm has not chosen an alternate route for the trucks, but he anticipates it will be costly. To reach Laflin, the trucks now have to travel into Taylor Borough in Lackawanna County or into Fall in Wyoming County to avoid the Coxton Bridge.

DURYEA Residents of Coxton Road are worried about the poor condition of the Coxton Bridge. They say the bridge, a narrow steel truss structure over the Lackawanna River, is in poor condition and should not be used by emergency vehicles or school buses. Several residents took their complaints to the borough council recently after the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) removed the pavement over the bridge's wooden floor, and limited the bridge to vehicles weighing 10 tons or less. The borough's police department is enforcing the weight limit. Exceptions are made for fire trucks.

Paul Komensky, the fire chief of Germania Hose Company, said fire trucks weight about 19 tons. Joseph Quinn, a spokesman for PennDOT in said the was removed to lighten up the bridge's truss.
