LECLAIR, Jacques 1940-2015 It is with great sadness that the family of Jacques Leclair announces his passing at the Montreal General Hospital on May 8, 2015 after a brave battle with a very aggressive cancer. Jacques was much loved by his wife Jennifer and their children Marc (Xuan) and Caroline (Jimmy Kalavritinos). He was a most devoted Grandpapa to Sarah and Simon Leclair-Sanz and Charles Leclair, and dear 'Jacquapa' to Matthew and Liam Kalavritinos.

Jacques was the eldest child of J. Leclair and Estelle Ferron; and is survived by his brother Paul (Nicole) and their children Pierre and Sophie (Todd Reichson); and by his sister Louise and her children Alexandre and Veronik Sansoucy. He grew up in Outremont and Westmount and was educated at and at Hautes Etudes Commerciales. Although he travelled widely while studying and had many interests, Jacques knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life. His passion lay in the world of business and entrepreneurship and immediately after graduating with an MBA from HEC, he joined the small paper products company in Saint- Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu which his father had acquired in 1954.

With loyal partners and employees, Jacques and his brother Paul spent 50 years transforming Emballage St- into a leading manufacturer of flexible packaging products with over 600 employees, three plants in Quebec and subsidiaries in the United States and China. Jacques was very proud when his children joined the company and when Marc eventually replaced him as President. He remained very involved, guiding and supporting the management team until his death. The loves of Jacques' life were his family, his work, tennis, books, and history. Especially tennis.

He met his wife Jennifer on the tennis courts and in 1972 they moved with Marc and Caroline to the home that he loved so much on the Richelieu River in Chambly. The whole family were keen tennis players and many, many happy hours were spent on the courts at St. Stephen's Tennis Club in Chambly, at SaniSport Boucherville in winter and later at the Mount Royal Tennis Club. Jacques was a modest, optimistic person with a brilliant mind, who was usually found with a book in his hand, and who he was always happy to chat with everyone. His plans to travel, to watch his grandchildren grow up and to continue working and playing tennis were cut short too soon.

We will miss him terribly. The Funeral Service will take place at Notre Dame-de-Bonsecours Church, 750 Rue, Richelieu, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015. A Reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Summit School Foundation (www.summit-school.com) or to Giant Steps Foundation (www.giantstepsmontreal.com), both wonderful schools for special needs children in Montreal, would be greatly appreciated.

He left peacefully in his sleep on May 7, 2015. As a renowned Civil Engineer and Professor Emeritus at Concordia University in Montreal, Dr. Zielinski's legacy includes many innovative designs in both architectural and industrial buildings around the world. His reputation as a 'father of pre-cast construction' was established early in his engineering career, and he was acknowledged as a Production Pioneer and Pioneer in Design by the Government of his native Poland.

He was an innovative pioneer, with 13 patents, 84 journal publications, 74 conference papers, a book Betonowe Dzwigary and numerous contributions to books and design bulletins to his credit. He was the recipient of the Gzowski Gold Medal for the best paper published by CSCE (The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering) in 1978. He developed the UCOPAN (Universal Concrete Panel) system for modular panelized building, which has been adopted in a number of countries, especially Poland, India, Nepal, Caribbean Islands and Canada. In 2014, his private residence, designed and built using the UCOPAN system as one of the first prefabricated concrete structures in Montreal, was declared a Culturally Significant Heritage House by the Direction du Patrimoine et des Institutions de la Culture et des Communications du Zenon was born in Poland on April 25, 1927, the son of Stefania Kolendo and Mikolaj Zielinski, and older brother to Lucia Zielinska. He earned a Master of Civil Engineering and Industrial Planning (1950) and Doctor of Technical Service (1957) degree from Warsaw Technical University.

He was the Head of the Department for Design and Standardization of Precast Pre-stressed Structures at the Industrial Building Research and Design Office in Warsaw for twelve years, and winner of the Golden Cross of Merit for Achievement in Design (1959), and five Annual National Awards for Best Design. In 1952, he married Czeslawa Bychowska, an architect, his partner in life and their work, both dedicated to designing and building innovative and low-cost housing in many countries around the world. Zenon left Poland in 1962, as part of a U.S. Department of State program, and conducted research and lectured at the University of Illinois and of California. Between 1963-65, he was Visiting Associate Professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, School of Design and Civil Engineering Department.

Between 1967-71, he was a Ford Foundation Consultant on Low Income Housing and Structural Design in India and Nepal. Dr. Zielinski emigrated to Canada in 1971, as full-time Professor at Concordia University, Montreal, in what is now the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering (Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science).

Dr. Zielinski established the area of pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete in both teaching research within the university, while continuing his work on segmental and pre-cast construction, and consulting on major projects in Canada, Indonesia, Iran and the Caribbean under the umbrella of Ucopan Designers and Ucopan Enterprises Inc (in which he was partner with architect Czeslawa Bychowska-Zielinska). He established and headed the structures research team, and in 1989, under his leadership it was ranked number one in Quebec by FCAR. Dr. Zielinski was dedicated professor, deeply interested in the success of his students while demanding them to achieve the highest standards.

He supervised to completion 11 Ph.D. students and a number of Masters thesis students. He was appointed Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2004.
