With five hearts, he would either rebid a second suit, raise partner, or rebid one no-trump. This knowledge allows North to raise with only a doubleton trump since he knows there is a 6-2 fit. He does not have enough to force to game, but the invitational sequence describes his hand nicely.

South continues to game with his extra values and gets a diamond lead against four hearts. South does not appear to be in any ON BRIDGE particular jeopardy and indeed he is not, if he analyzes the hand properly. The right way for South to look at the contract is to see that he is in danger of losing two trumps, a spade and a diamond. This will be his fate if he tries to draw trump at once. However, the solution is simple: South must take a spade finesse at once.

When it loses and a diamond comes back, South can take dummy's diamond ace and discard his diamond loser quickly on dummy's spade winners. Only at this point in the hand does he take the heart finesse. He has to lose two trumps as the cards lie, but that is still 10 tricks. It is important to focus on your winners and losers before automatically drawing trump. As many contracts fail from drawing trump prematurely as are lost from not drawing trump early enough.

LEAD WITH THE ACES South holds: K74 9 1032 0 Q653 SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST 19 Pass 20 Pass 39 Pass 4 NT Pass 59 Pass 69 All pass ANSWER: Lead the spade four. On this auction, both diamonds and hearts seem to be lying well for declarer, so an aggressive defense seems called for. Try to set up spade winners, and hope you can get in later to cash them.
