Plant, and members of his fam- ily were injured.

A member of the London staff of Swan Song, Led Zeppelin's record company, flew to Rhodes in a chartered jet equipped with stretchers, blood plasma and two British doctors. Plant's injuries are multiple fractures of the ankle and elbow. His wife, Maureen, had concussions and a leg broken in several places, four fractures of the pelvis and facial lacerations. Plant's son, Karac, 4, has a broken leg and cuts and bruises. His daughter, Carmen, 7, has a broken wrist and cuts and bruises.

An October tour of the Far East also has been postponed. University without campus embarking on new course EDMONTON, Canada (AP) Tim Byrne spends much of his time feeling his way as president of Alberta's Athabasca University an institution without a campus. The 68-year-old former provincial deputy minister of education heads a two-year-old open university which aims at providing higher education to people in their own homes. While all the mechanical problems of preparing print, audio and visual course material are far from solved, Athabasca has reached the point where it must now solve some of its students' problems. Byrne said he is more worried about finding ways to give the students the necessary self- discipline to complete courses than anything else, and the university's staff of about 35 during the next few months will devote much of its energy to monitoring progress and seeking ways of motivating people.

"We know that we have to, in some way, find a new set of circumstances that provide ex- ternal pressures for internal achievement," he said in an interview. The university has been forced to feel its way, he said. Its existence depends on being innovative and developing new ways of teaching effectively. Cue suggestion involves getting students to sign a contract when they start a course which will give the university's tutors, who do much of their work by telephone, the right to remind students of the goals they are supposed to meet. In effect, ABCnowrated number! NEW YORK (AP) ABC, enjoying its best season in years, finished No.

1 in the weekly ratings averages for the first time since January, according to the latest A.C. Nielsen rat ngs. Nielsen figures released Tuesday for the week ending Oct. 12 estimated that ABC's prime-time viffwing audience was 13 million homes each night, compared with 12.5 million for NBC and about 12 million for CBS. Also, seven of its shows were in the top 20.

CBS traditionally has been the front-runner in weekly averages for the last 20 years and ABC has been a consistent third-place finisher. Over-all, for the first five weeks of the season, CBS is the front-runner, according to Nielsen's estimated average audience levels. CBS' "All in the Family" was the top-ranked show last week. The 19 other most popular shows were "Sanford and Son" (NBC); "Phyllis" and "Maude" (both CBS); "Six Million Dollar Man" (ABC); "Rhoda" (CBS); "Marcus Welby," "The Rookies," "Streets of San Francisco," "On the Rocks" and "Barney Miller" (all ABC); "Chico and the Man," last week's baseball playoffs Tuesday night, and "Little House on the Prairie" (all NBC); "Good Times" (CBS); "Starsky and Hutch" (ABC); "Mary Tyler Moore," "The Jeffersons" and "Medical Center" (all CBS), and the "NBC Sunday Mystery they will agree to be monitored. The university had hoped to be completely free, with students starting and finishing courses whenever they wished, but it now appears deadlines will be necessary, he said.

Athabasca, he said, offers its 500 students courses in ecology, social science and humanities. Its long-range purpose is to develop degree courses but for now it is offering general courses that will lead students to applied training. They do it via wlial is, in affect, a correspondence course but one which is painstakingly put together, combining v.urk books, texts, audio tapes and telephone tutors.
