a Christian County Feb 1 South Hopkins Feb. 4 Crittenden County Away By LARRY SCHMIDT Baa AmL Sport Editor The term "franchise plater" is normally reserved for discussions about professional sports. In the Fifth District, the phrase describes. Caldwell County's Mike Gray, a 6-fooW senior forward. With a supporting cast to complement his averages of 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game, he is the reason coaches around the district paint Caldwell as the favorite.

"Probably you have to look at Caldwell County and Trigg County as the top two teams," Livingston Central coach Mike Riley said. "But I think you give the edge to Caldwell because they have the Gray kid." "Caldwell County is the favorite because of Mike Gray," Trigg County coach George Radford said. "The guy is super, I enjoy watching him play but I don't like to see him playing against us." As a junior, Gray scored in double figures in 27 games as the Tigers lost to Madisonville in the championship game of the Second Region. The loss ended a 22-7 season and was the finale for longtime coach Harry Byrd. Seven-year assistant coach Robin Scott took over quickly, and the Tigers are not expected to miss a beat.

Byron Copeland, who will run the offense, was a double-digit scorer at second guard last year. How the 6-1 senior adapts to his change is a "He's got a big adjustment to make," Scott Three-year letterman Wayne Jones, a 6-3 senior forward-center, is the only starter from a 15-12 squad. He averaged 12 points and 7.5 rebounds. Shane McManus (64 forward-center), Dykie McGee (6-2 forward), Kevin Layne (5-10 guard) and Chris Ladd (5-10) carry the rest of the load. Crittenden County has a new coach, Joe McCord, but "new' only applies to the door of the locker room from which he emerges.

He was the longtime coach of the Lady Rockets, then took a three-year hiatus but is back with the boys program this season after Hank Bowen returned to Marshall County as an assistant coach. McCord will have to rebuild the Rockets, who return only one starter (Tony Nichols) from an 11-15 squad. "We are going to try and play pressure defense," McCord said. "We are real short and very inexperienced." Nichols averaged 10 points as a junior, but needs help from lettermen Sean McKinney, David Cozart and Ron Smith if McCord's 27th season in coaching is to be successful. Lyon County went to Somerset to persuade Kirk Chiles to take over a program that has gone through four coaching changes in as many years.

"We have very little experience back," Chiles said. "It's like practicing with the junior varsity. We are just going to try and improve as we go." Stewart Burton (5-11 guard) and Jamie Crady (5-10 guard) are the only lettermen. Dac.14 Dse. I Tri County Home Dec.

Steve Smiley (6-5), Cary Oliver (6-2) and Anthoney Hickey (5-11) are inexperienced but are expected to fill out the starting lineup. If the two-horse show of Caldwell County fails to outdistance the field, Trigg County is ready to take command. With three starters back from a 13-13 squad, Radford is poised to run for the title. "We've got a pretty good bunch back," he said.

"We've got good size and quickness, but we are missing some outside shooting." Donnie Dillard (5 center), Chris Radford (6-0 guard), and Scott Shrills (64 forward) give the Wildcats but a fourth starter was declared ineligible. "With some good leadership, we will be right back in the thick of things," Radford said. After Trigg and Caldwell, the race is for the final three seeds in the tournament. Livingston Central, Lyon County and Crittenden County can be grouped in a category marked young and inexperienced. At Livinsgton, Mike Riley's Cardinals have minor experience returning, but only one starter.

"It's one of those years where we have to realize that we are going to take our lumps early," Riley said. "We hope to grow and develop and I think we can be competitive later in the season." The biggest problem is lack of experience; four players from last year's 7-17 squad return. "Our perimeter shooting has beeri good," Riley said, "but the one thing that hasn't developed is better-rebounding.

We need to get better there and develop more patience." Dawn Crass (54) and Lequita Smith (54) are the only seniors. Mary Ann Young (54) and Stephanie Howard (5-9) saw action last year as sophomores and constitute the other veterans. New coach Ralph Brown at Lyon County will be hard-put to duplicate last year's 194 record. The Lyons were decimated by graduation. Mitzi Lizanby (5-11 junior) averaged 9 points a.

game last season, to lead the returnees statistically. Kim Dixon (54) pitched in 3 points a game and Amie Blaylock counted 2. The young Lyons could contend by tournament time. Mike Wright is optimistic as he enters his third season at Trigg County. The Wildcats were 4-21 last year, but return four starters, Jennifer Butts (54 senior), Denise Christy (5-9 senior), Susan Sloan (54 senior) and Marni Quist (64 junior) give the Wildcats a tall lineup.

The other major ingredient may come from 5-7 sophomore Janay McGill. By LARRY SCHMIDT Sun Aut Sporti Editor The more things change, the more they remain the cliche with eternal life. Should the results of play in the Fifth District girls race this seasWbe set to music, the audio would have the effect of a stereo needle were stuck on a record: Caldwell County wins, Caldwell County wins, Caldwell County the picture? After all, the Tigers went through district competition last season like a hot knife through butter, a perfect 84. In nine seasons, Coach William Fralick has given the Tigers a habit of contending for the district championship. Last year's 22-7 team brought his record to 118-91 at the Princeton school, and it's a sure bet that he'll improve on the 118 this winter.

The Tigers have two of the finest players in the district in seniors Katie Brown (5-10) and Dina Ahrens (54). Brown was one the Fifth's leading scorers last season with a 15.3 average, while Ahrens averaged 11. Kim Gardner adds experience, at forward and averaged seven points a game. "Caldwell County should be above the rest of us," Crittenden County coach Jimmy Croft said. Nobody will argue that point.

"Caldwell County has got edge," Livingston Central coach Glen Ringstaff said. So who is going to challenge the Tigers? "From that spot on (No. 1), I really don't know," Croft said. "It's the most balance I have ever seen." Croft may have the best-kept secret in the district, and his Rockets may emerge to challenge. Crittenden County was 11-11 last season, but returns five players who were starters at Varying times last year.

Juli Smith, a 54 senior guard-forward, is the top veteran with 12-point, 5-rebound standards. The team's other senior, Kristi Beavers (5-7) averaged 4 points and 3 rebounds. The rest of the veterans are sophomores Serita Belt (64), Danette Gough (54) and Dawn Stone (5-3). Belt gives the Rockets a legitimate post player and is expected to improve on her 8-point, 8-rebound averages. "We are looking forward to this season," Croft said, "but our main concern is substitutes to go with our starters.

II West Hopkins Away Feb. Todd Central Arizona shakes up Top Twenty in Alaska By JIM O'CONNELL AP Basketball Writer ANCHORAGE, Alaska Arizona is still playing a lot of tough, ranked teams. Unlike last season, however, the Wildcats are beating them. Ninth-ranked Arizona finished off Thanksgiving weekend in Alaska in style, beating No. 3 Syracuse 8049 Monday night to win the 10th Great Alaska Shootout.

"We need games like this, facing top-ranked teams," Arizona guard Steve Kerr said after the Wildcats' second straight victory over a ranked team as they beat then-No. 9 Michigan 7944 in the semifinals. "This a real challenge and I feel it only makes us better. "Last year we played a lot of good teams but we lost each of the games, not this year." In the only other Monday night game involving a ranked team, No. 11 Purdue beat Illinois State 6841.

The Wildcats, who played without Kerr last season while he was undergoing rehabilitation from knee surgery, lost to Nevada-Las Vegas, Georgetown, Illinois and Iowa. "John Thompson said we were a good team after we beat the Sovi ets," forward Sean Elliott said of the Georgetown and 1988 U.S. Olympic coach. "When we were watching North Carolina-Syracuse, I told our guys, we can beat these teams and they just gave me these blank stares. -1 knew we were good." Elliott was the best of the players in Alaska this weekend and was named Most Valuable Player of the Shootout after leading the Wildcats with 16 points and 11 rebounds against Syracuse.

"Elliott was the key," Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim said. "We couldn't contain him and when we did contain him he's smart and found the open man." However, it wasn't Elliott but sixth man Ken Lofton who was responsible for the deciding run in the game. Arizona had led by as many as 12 points, 58-46 with 12:19 to play, but the Orangemen, who were the No. 1 team in the preseason poll, went on 15-2 run with Sherman Douglas, who finished with 18 points, scoring eight of them. "I thought we made a great comeback against a team mat's tough to come back against," Boeheim said.
