The Rangers' Randle has the same hustle, confidence and potential power of his National -League counterpart, Joe Morgan.

When Manager Ted Williams assembled his Texas Rangers squad in Pompano Beach, last February for Spring Training Randle las one of three highly regarded keystone performers. The other two, Ted Kubiak and Tim Cullen, were his seniors both in experience and age. Randle quickly caught Williams' eye with his smooth fielding and power at the plate. Ultimately Cullen was severed and Kubiak relegated to utility although when Williams dealt veteran reliefer Joe Grzenda to St. Louis for the switchhitter, he was figured to take over second because of his steady hitting.

Kubiak has a .250 lifetime average in the majors. Randle had other ideas, claiming "my mother didn't raise me to be a minor league ball player." As an outfielder at Arizona State University, Randle was strictly a right handed batter, but at spring camp he decided to try hitting from both sides of the plate. This willingness to develop a new strength also impressed Williams although Randle since has reverted to righthanded. With veteran Toby Harrah at shortstop, the Rangers have a strong second play combination. Randle is improving with each game on making the pivot.

In recent weeks the little Long Beach, native who stands 5-10 and weighs 165, has given way to Kubiak and Dalton Jones on occasions as Williams sees need for the 23-year old sophomore to take a break as the summer heat takes its toll on stamina. Randle hit a three-run homer Saturday in the top of the eighth against the American League Champion Baltimore Orioles and propelled the red-hot Texas Rangers to victory. The Rangers also stunned the Orioles on Sunday with a sur. prising 3-2 win for a four game sweep-one of the amazing feats of the Rangers' first season in Texas, Publinks Tourney Underway Today INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.
