Tapa making is one of the most overlooked of traditional handicrafts although tapa was used by man as early as 2,000 B.C., and is still made and worn today in equatorial regions of the world. Tapa is a Polynesian word for this bark cloth, which is made from the inner bark of the mulberry and other trees, handbeaten and washed to produce a fabric that can be as coarse as -a wool blanket or as soft as a silk scarf Most of the more than 150 objects in the exhibition are antique and rare pieces included is a book of samples collected by Captain James Cook on his 18th-century voyages of exploration.
