A sticky man-to-man defense and a balanced scoring attack in the second half propelled the Calloway County Lakers to a 51-47 victory over Marshall County in the opening boys' game of the Fourth District Tournament here Thursday night. An estimated 6,000 fans in the Murray State- -University Fieldhouse witnessed the No. 9 Lakers earn a berth to the First Region Tournament in the same arena next week. In a girls' preliminary contest, Murray High used an effective zone defense to turnback Calloway County's girls, 34-27.

The Lady Tigers advance to the First Region Girls' tournament at Mayfield next week. Calloway coached by veteran David King, held the seventh-ranked Marshals to 11 points in the third period and just nine in the fourth. The Lakers battled back from a six-point deficit at intermission to winning their conference championships include Furman, Penn, Montana, San Diego State, Arizona State and Nevada-Las Vegas. In expanding to 32 teams, the NCAA abolished first-round byes which once went to winners of nine conferences. Instead, there now are automatic berths for 16 conference winners and invitations to 16 at-large teams.

Any number of those teams can be second-place clubs from conferences. This year, the NCAA went to seven conferences for two teams the SEC, Steve Carlton, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, takes his workout at spring training camp In Clearwater, Fla. But McGregor was hit with his fourth personal foul seconds later and that would be the last action he would see until the final quarter.

In the third period, Calloway County moved to within two points of the lead, 29-27, but out-tallying the Marshals, 6-2, in just over three minutes of action. Miller canned a pair of 15-footers to decrease the deficit to two but Marshall County's Mike Rosa completed a three-point play to move his team back on top by five, 32-27. King removed James Wells from the lineup at 4:35 after the big pivotman injured an elbow after falling to the hardwood. He returned to the lineup two minutes later with his team still down by five and quickly handed off an assist to Miller, who sank the fielder. With McGregor out of the lineup for the entire period, the Marshals sadly missed their best scorer.

The Lakers caught Marshall County at 36-all at the 1 02 mark on a short jumper by guard Tommy Futrell and a free throw and a putback by James Wells. Rosa sank another field goal with 47 seconds remaining but Beane countered with two points of his own with 31 seconds to go as both teams entered the final quarter of action in a 38-38 deadlock. James Wells connected on a turnaround jumper after the opening tipoff in the final eight minutes to give his team a 40-38 advantage and the Lakers were never headed after that point. Rosa broke loose for 12 points in the fourth quarter but the other four Marshall Countv starters managed two points apiece against the tough defense thrown up by the Lakers." "The boys were fired up and they just played a tough, gritty, hard-nosed defense," King said. "We have been playing better defensively since the beginning of February when we started using the man-to-man regularly." I points in the fourth quarter," King added.

Calloway found itself in foul trouble midway through the second quarter as the Wells brothers 6-8 senior James and 6-1 sophomore Mike were whistled for their third fouls. With the score tied at 13-all, Mike Wells was given his third at 6:13 when he fouled Marshall County's Larry McGregor. McGregor, however, failed to hit the first shot of a 'bonus situation and the Lakers' Mark Miller connected on a jumper on his team's following trip down floor. That bucket gave Calloway its first lead of the ballgame, 15-13, at 5:43. But the Marshals countered with eight consecutive markers to grab a 21-15 advantage at 3:59.

McGregor, a 6-1 senior forward, chipped in four of his first-half total of 14 on a field goal and two free tosses after being fouled by James Wells. That was the third on Wells (at 4:12) and he went to the bench for the rest of the first half Big 10, Atlantic Coast, Eight, Western Athletic, Big Mis- souri Valley and Pac-8. The only catch is that the second team must go across the country from the conference winner. And that is how Kentucky will end up in the West Regional if Alabama wins the SEC and goes to the Mideast. Among first-round games, two look exceptionally good.

One matches No. 6 Kentucky or No. 7 Alabama against No. 5 Marquette. The other would match either Kentucky or Alabama against No.

9 Arizona State. The victory advances the Comets to Saturday night's championship game against the winner of tonight's Hickman County-Fulton County contest. Both the winner and runner-up advance to the First Region tourney at Murray State University next week. The Comets got 20-plus performances from two players Greg Carter and Robert Martin. Carter singed the nets for 24 points while Martin gunned in 22 points.

Other Comets in double figures included David Garrett with 14 and Steve Martin with 13 points. Fulton City's Robert Patton, however, walked away with game scoring honors as he pumped in 25 points in a losing cause. Keith Wade added 12 for the Bulldogs. The hot-shooting Comets hit a "sizzling 60 per cent of their field goal efforts, connecting on 41 of 68 tries, and addding 14 of 21 at the charity stripe. Fulton City had a hard time finding the hoop as the Bulldogs hit only 25 of 67 tries (37) and 13 of 20 from the free throw line.

The Comets also won the battle of the boards, grabbing 54 while Fulton City only pulled down 27. Now, one of them Kentucky district tourney the West Regional, and the road to the final in San Diego on March 31 might be easier that way.

On Thursday, the NCAA sent out the invitations to its expanded 32-team tournament. It might be the strongest field ever. In addition to Kentucky, Indiana and Alabama, there are Marquette, UCLA and Louisville. The tournament opens with 16 first-round games at eight sites on Saturday, March 15. The winners advance to the four regional tournaments the following week, and those four survivors head for San Diego and hopes of a national title.

Of the 32 teams, 'only 18 are firm as of today. Most of the remaining 14 will be decided by Saturday night as a result of regular season and tournament games yet to be played. There may be playoff games needed. Other teams accepting NCAA bids on Thursday were Cincinnati, Creighton, Notre Dame, Utah- State, Oregon State and New Mexico State. And if the Wildcats don't win it this year, they may be forever thankful. Kentucky is, as usual, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association' annual playoffs that determine the nation's best college basketball team. But under a new formula, the Wild-: cats don't have to win the SEC. They might be better off if they don't. Here's why: If Alabama beats Auburn Saturday night, the Crimson Tide wins the SEC, and they will be in the NCAA's Mideast Regional, playing No.

5 Marquette in the first round and still faced with the prospect of top-ranked Indiana and possibly UCLA in the same region.
