PAGE 7-C THE PADUCAH SUN, PADUCAH, KENTUCKY THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1900 Green picket says truck struck him A member of the carpenters union manning a picket line at the convention center construction site reported today that he was struck by a truck driven by one of the project superintendents. Wesley Smith, of Champ Drive, told police he was walking a picket line at 2nd and Madison shortly before 7 a.m. when he was struck on the left side of his body by a pickup truck driven by Rudolph L.

Brown of Velpen, Ind. Smith told police he sustained a shoulder injury. He was taken by ambulance to Western Baptist Hospital. A hospital spokesman said Smith was "treated and relased." He said X-rays were taken and no fracture was detected. The spokesman said he was not at liberty to comment further.

The Sun attempted to obtain a copy of the emergency room report, but Dan Akin, associate administrator at the hospital, said such records are confidential. The Paducah police report stated that Smith had no apparent injury, except for a possible bruise on the shoulder. Randle Fondaw, of Oak Street, who was on the picket line with Smith, said Brown drove through a stop sign at Madison and struck Smith when he cut the corner short while making a left turn into the construction site. Fondaw said they were standing next to a gate which blocked part of the entrance. Police said the gate was not struck.

No charges had been filed in connection with the incident. Union picket lines appeared at the site Tuesday morning after developer Bob Green and nine area trade unions failed to reach agreement for a work contract. Work at the site began about two months ago and discussions have been under way since then between Green and union officials. Green issued a statement over the weekend that he plans no further talks with the unions, and that he intends to build it "open shop." W.B. Sanders, president of the Western Kentucky Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO, said area unions have been offered support from nonconstruction unions and labor groups in their efforts to obtain a contract with Green.

He said one labor group has offered to man picket lines on Saturdays, while another has "offered us any assistance we need." Party officials criticize Hubbard LOUISVILLE, Ky. U.S. Rep. Carroll Hubbard (D- Mayfield) has been accused by state and national Democratic leaders here of failing to support actively President Carter's campaign for reelection. Hubbard is unavailable to respond to charges made by party officials because he is en route to Washington today from five-day trip to Panama, where he has been since Saturday.

The trip is his first foreign trip in his nearly six years in Congress. Before leaving, Hubbard said Defense and State department officials had encouraged him as chairman of the House subcommittee to inspect the operation of the Panama Canal. In a copyrighted story in today's Louisville Courier Journal, Hubbard was criticized by Democratic State Chairman Bob Cobb for failing to campaign for the president. Bodies of 2 missing men recovered GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. The bodies of two Greenville fishermen, David Jarvis, 30, and Scott Wilson, 25, were recovered Wednesday night in Little Bear Creek in Kentucky Lake.

The story also quoted Robert Strauss, chairman of the Carter-Mondale campaign who was in Louisville Wednesday, as saying Hubbard was "dogging it" in his support of the president.

Strauss said he intended to talk to Hubbard a about his role in the campaign when the congressman returns, the story said. Hubbard is scheduled to return to Washington late tonight, his press aide said today. Some Democrats said Hubbard's trip shows his unwillingness to work for Carter now with the election less than two weeks away. Kathie O'Callaghan, Hubbard's press secretary, said the trip was scheduled now because Congress is not in session and because it was convenient for U.S. and Panamanian officials.

She said today Hubbard is not aware of the charges made by Cobb and Strauss. CLASSIFIED Advertising Dept. DIAL 443-1771 2 Consecutive Days 75: Per. Line 3 Consecutive 66 Per Line 6 Consecutive Days Per Line 1 Month $10.62 Per Line to place your WANT AD MONDAY THRU FRIDAY 8:00 A.M. TO 5 P.M.
