The Paducah Sun Thursday, April 20, 2000 118 Nuclear cleanup costs soaring By Matt Kelley Associated Press WASHINGTON Cleaning up environmental damage from the nation's nuclear weapons program will cost between $168 billion and $212 billion up to 44 percent more than the Energy Department estimated two years ago, a new agency report says. There are 113 sites nationwide. Seventeen will take as much as a decade longer to clean up, while the department hopes to finish work at five sites more quickly than earlier forecast, according to the report. DOE officials say the changes in 1 cost and time occurred because they now have a better handle on the scope of the contamination and what is required to clean up the sites. "The numbers this year were more accurate and realistic.

That was the difference," department spokesman Tom Welch said. The current and former nuclear weapons sites include some of the most highly radioactive areas in the country Hanford in Washington state, Savannah River in South Carolina, Rocky Flats near Denver and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. DOE is responsible for cleaning up 1.7 trillion gallons of contaminated groundwater, 100 million gallons of highly radioactive liquid, 2,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel and 18 metric tons of weapons grade plutonium at the sites. The increased cost estimates contained in the report, which was released Friday, are not surprising, said David Adelman, a lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "The DOE has had to admit some failures and be a little more realistic about the complexity of the said Adelman, who monitors the nuclear cleanup for the environmental group.

Those failures, he said, included attempts to use new cleanup technology at Hanford and Idaho that did not work. Adelman also noted the cleanup schedules do not include the long-term monitoring and security needed at the sites. Columbine bungled, suit claims Associated Press refused permission to shoot Columbine High School gunman Dylan Klebold through a library window, a lawsuit alleged Wednesday. A second lawsuit alleged one student was killed by police gunfire. The lawsuits are among at.

least nine that have been filed against the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department alleging deputies mishandled the rescue and ignored advance warnings. Angela -Sanders, daughter of slain teacher Dave Sanders, contended a sharpshooter claimed he had a clear shot of Klebold in the library during the rampage. He informed commanders but was denied permission to fire, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court. In a second lawsuit, filed by five families, lawyers for the relatives of slain student Daniel Rohrbough alleged he was killed by police, not the gunmen, based upon reports from a police officer and teacher at the scene, the position of their son's body, and trajectory of the fatal bullet.

They also alleged sheriff's deputies failed to rescue the students in a timely manner and failed to properly train deputies, dispatchers and 911 operators. The lawsuits were filed one day before the anniversary of the April 20, 1999, attack in which Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded about two dozen before they committed suicide.
