MAGNUS POIRIER 1: 514 727-2847 Continued on page D8 ALAN HUSTAK THE GAZETTE ed his budding artistic career.

He served in the merchant marine during the war. After the war, he moved to Montreal with intentions of becoming a serious artist, but once he began working for the Standard, "cartooning won out. It paid more," he once said. He moved to Morin Heights in the of Laurentians, joined the local volunteer Last fire brigade, and for the rest of his life worked out of his home office. He hit his stride in the 1960s and '70s, and when he turned out covers for and Maclean's, Weekend and the Montrealer magazines and did other commercial The work.

He was a regular contributor to the CBC's Observer television program, in which he illustrated the week's top on news stories with cartoons, and he did film strips for the National Film Board. "In his mind, he was really a sculptor," said his daughter, Elizabeth, "He put a lot of his energy and his time into his sculptures. "He explored sculpture to the max. He build his own foundry in Morin Heights, but he would wince at the idea that he was an artist. He was certainly not pretentious." Whalley's cartoons appeared in The Gazette's editorial pages in the 1970s and '80s.

He also illustrated books for Vancouver humourist Eric Nicol, including An Uninhibited History of Canada, Canada Cancelled Because of Lack of Interest, Say Uncle and Canadian Politics Unplugged. Whalley published a book of his cartoons, Bird on a Wire, and collaborated with poet Mary Geggle on a book of parodies of Canadian art, called Northern Blights: More Than Anyone Needs to Know About Canadian Painting. "What is really amazing is that he was able to make a living freelancing at a time when there weren't any freelance cartoonists in the country," said Roy Peterson, the Vancouver Sun's veteran editorial cartoonist. "Even today, being a full-time newspaper cartoonist is a one-in-a-million job. Back then it was almost unheard of.

"While Whalley didn't exactly push boundaries, he had his own spare style. When you saw his work, you immediately knew whose work it was." Whalley is survived by his wife, Barbara Smith, whom he married in 1948, and by his three daughters: Martha, Elizabeth and Jennifer: A Funeral arrangements are pending. thegazette.canwest.com OBITUARY GEORGE WILLIAM TURNER February 28, 1940 August 31,2007.
