THE GAZETTE, MONTREAL, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2007 OBITUARIES (7 MOMOFUKU ANDO Changed the way North Americans eat Mr. Instant Ramen had his eureka moment in postwar Japan DENNIS HEVESI NEW YORK TIMES NEW YORK Momofuku Ando, who to the delight of dormitory students and other kitchen-resistant customers worldwide invented those small packets of flavoured dried noodles that require just a three-minute boil, died on Friday at a hospital in Osaka, Japan. Ando, the founder of the Nissin Food Products was 96. The cause was heart failure, said Larry Lampel, the company's senior resources manager at its U.S. headquarters in Gardena, Calif.

Starting with the chicken-broth noodles in cellophane bags that Ando first concocted in a shack behind his house in Ikeda, Japan, 49 years ago, Nissin now produces 16 flavours of what it calls Top Ramen and Cup Noodles. Besides six varieties of chicken, they include beef, shrimp, vegetable and spicy chili. The company sold 46.3 billion packs and cups around the world last year, earning $131 million U.S. in profit. In 1958, Ando virtually penniless after a credit association he served as chairman went bankrupt began experimenting with ways to prepare flavoured noodles by simply adding hot water.

The idea stemmed from an experience a decade earlier, when Japan was still ravaged by postwar poverty. In The Story of the Invention of Instant Ramen, an autobiography published in 2002, Ando told of walking through the rubble strewn streets of Osaka. "I happened to pass this area and saw a line 20, 30 metres long in front of a dimly lit stall from which clouds of steam were steadily rising," he wrote. "People dressed in shabby clothes shivered in the cold while waiting for their turn. The person who was with me said they were lined up for a bowl of ramen.

"I realized that people were willing to wait patiently just for a bowl of ramen." Ordinary unflavoured noodles were not the solution; Ando insisted his noodles be tasty, inexpensive and easy to prepare. The problem was flavouring them without making them mushy. Using a secondhand noodle-making machine and a large wok, Ando sprinkled soup on the noodles with a watering can, then kneaded and loosened them by hand after letting them partly dry. "This allowed the noodles to soak up the soup on the outer layer," he wrote. "I then dried the noodles so they would keep longer and could be easily prepared with boiling water." His invention arrived at the precipitous moment that Japan, too, was getting back on its feet.

The country was KYODO Ando experimented with a wok and noodle maker in a backyard shack. beginning to modernize in the late 1950s, with supermarkets opening and Japanese consumers developing demand for products that smacked of the nascent high age. It also coincided with the arrival of television as a major presence. Most observers credit the company's creatively adventurous TV ads with much of its success in holding market share. Some of the most memorable ads in Japan ran in the late 1980s and early 1990s and starred Arnold Schwarzeneg.

ger. Nissin replaced Schwarzenegger with a long -running series of prizewinning ads featuring cavemen struggling to put food on the table in a hostile environment, with instant noodles being produced to save the day. Born on March 5, 1910, in Taiwan while it was under Japanese occupation, Ando was a son of Japanese parents who had moved there from Osaka. When he was 23, he returned to Japan and, while a student at Ritsumeikan University, ran several clothing companies. In 1948, he started a company that produced salt; it changed its name to Nissin 10 years later.

Chicken was the prime ingredient in Nissin's global success. "By using chicken soup, instant ramen managed to circumvent religious taboos when it was introduced in different countries," Ando wrote. "Hindus may not eat beef and Muslims may not eat pork, but there is not a single culture, religion or country that forbids the eating of chicken." Nissin opened its first overseas operation, in California, in 1970. Besides Japan, it has plants in Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Hungary, Germany and Lancaster, Pa. In July 2005, the company vacuumpacked portions of instant noodles so that a Japanese astronaut, Soichi Noguchi, could have them on the space shuttle Discovery.

Ando said at the time, "I've realized my dream that noodles can go into space." IWAO TAKAMOTO Animator for Hanna-Barbera, Disney created Scooby Doo LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH were interned as enemy aliens in a LONDON Iwao Takamoto, who died on Monday at age 81, was a leading animator with Walt Disney and then HannaBarbera; he was responsible for the design of many popular cartoon characters, of which the best-known was Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo was a cowardly, greedy, bandy-legged Great Dane who assisted a group of four teenagers in solving mysteries. They always succeeded, perhaps because each mystery was exactly the same: a fairground, or museum, or factory, or some other suitable locale haunted by a mummy, or zombie, or similar monster. This spectre would eventually be unmasked as the proprietor of the establishment (who had been hoping to sell the site to developers) wearing a costume. He would then say: "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids." Iwao Takamoto was born on April 29, 1925.

His father, Chitoshi, had moved from Hiroshima to the United States to take farm labouring jobs, in the hope they would build up his strength and increase his chances of being accepted for university back home (which then had rigorous physical entrance requirements). In the event, he returned only once, to propose to his wife, Akino, and take her with him to Los Angeles. Iwao graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1942. MOUNT ROYAL COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES Memorial Memorial camp at Manzanar. There, young Iwao met a number of professional animators, who encouraged him in his drawing. In early 1945, he was granted an exeat from the camp to pick fruit in Idaho. Taking advantage of this degree of liberty, in May Takamoto telephoned Disney to make an appointment and was told to bring his portfolio. Since he did not have one, he hurried out to buy two sketchbooks.

"I just filled up both of them over a weekend with whatever I could think mostly of people," he recalled. When the interviewer saw them, he asked Takamoto to wait for 15 minutes. When he returned, he asked: "Can you start on Monday?" At Disney, he contributed to Cinderella, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty and had plenty of scope for what was to become his long suit dogs on One Hundred and One Dalmatians and with Lady and the Tramp. He was solely responsible for the character design for Lady, and, after leaving Disney in 1961 and joining Hanna-Barbera, drew up the Jetson's dog Astro and Muttley from Wacky Races. When it came to Scooby Doo, he took advice on the qualities most sought ter in Great Danes straight back, straight legs and a small chin and invested the character with the opposite traits.
