IO Monday, June 25, 1928 liL PAS IIKRALD DIET HEALTH By Lulu Hunt M. D. jLuiawMr A I TOLD you last wctk, you have to have a ktiowlctlgc of the caloric values of foods in order to have an intelligent idea of diet. The calorie is the standard unit for heat in a urcineiit, and also is the standard unit of measurement of heat and energy of foods. Misinformed people will tell you that this knowledge of calories ail bosh, has been i a rded, etc.

this is absolutely false. It is true that itains and mineral elements cannot be measured by the caloric, iiut' iour-fiiths of our food are taken for its energy and beating values, and liid only measurement for that is the calorie. The other fifth, or say 2(1 of ourcmfwyp 20 percent, of our food, is taken for its building and repair is the protein or this also can be measured by the calorie I How ever, in the calories of food taken, it is highly important to include the foods that are high in the vitamins aud mineral elements. If you were to say that if you had your full number of calories a day you would be well nourishhed, that be false. You have to have the correct number of calories of the right foods.

In reducing, you may cut down only on the calorics of energy and heat foods your vitamins and mineral elements and repair food must be as in a normal diet. You can see the reason for this. It is not counting calories. You can do it only approxi- but it will bring results, and if you are inclined to over or underweight, you will always have to do it You must have a good teKtbook on the subject. Most books on dietetics have lists of foods in 100 portions (There is one callcd Diet and Health, that strangely partial to).

Now you know I cannot continue to you menus for the rest of your life, got it) d(i that However, if you belong to my class, 1 want you to the following daily foundation diet; then I am sure you will be getting your vitamins, mineral elements and repair food; and while you will reduce for fat, you reduce your health; in fact, improve it. Daily Foundation Diet First: At least a half pound of sonje watery vegetables (the green leaf vegetables arc especially good) spinach, celery, cabbage, watercress, beet top greens, tomatoes, etc. A half pound of these, cooked or uncooked, without fat, will be approximateiy 50 C. Have raw cabbage, carrots, spinach and tomatoes (raw, canned or cooked), frequently for vitamin A and the mineral elements. Secotul: One-half pound of other vegetables, such as carrots, beets, onions, and squash, etc.

These will approximate about 100 without fat. Third; 200 (- of fruit. (Medium-sized orange, apple, ih is best to take a large of the and fruits ra P'ourth: At least one pint of skim (or huttennilk) in some form in cooking, drinks or cheese. You need it for lime and complete protein. Fifth: medium-sized small potato, 100 (', or one large slice of whole wheat bread, one-half inch thick, same number of calorics, of a cup of cereal.

If you iiave starchy or sugary desserts, you can omit these. Sixth: One to two lea spoonfuls cod liver oil each), or two to four cod liver tjil tablets (practically no calories), or one tablespoonful butter (100 or lOO (', of cream he sure of sufficienl of the vitamin A. Seventh: Protein. Yi)U must have more protein (building and repair fooil) besides whaht you get in the milk, so take three to four ounces of very lean meat or fish, or two eggs 130 to 200 total). 1 have outlined for you comes to 800-000 ('.

If you go on a 1200 day for your reducing diet, that will leave you cpiite a few inore calories for things you like. Hut I advise you not to take sweets because it is best to learn not to care for them. Arrange your meals and menus to suit yourself. Hut exceed your calorie limit for the It is isable to have a few' calories at tea time and before going to bed. Sins.

Thursday Before Lent Is Barcelona Day By OKA W. L. SLATFJi. Barcelona, is the biggest, busiest, and much the most energetic city in Spain. And these days just before it is perfcctK charming.

crammed with color; ropes of serpentine, bales and barrels of confetti; big shawls looking from a little distance for all the world like real shawls, ortly forty times as bright, but made of printed ci'cpe paper; carnival cos- tunjcs, masks, long curled wigs, not only white ones, but green and let and flaming red. Flags, already flying in parks and avenues, the red bars of i'ataluma as red and white cross of Aragon, here in Barcelona, as well as the hanjier of Spain, iircat preparations of stands and booths and platforms. Thursday, before Lent, is a holiday. every child in Barcelona has had its hair curled. Some of them, dressed in immaculate best clothes, even to brand new reefer coats, and tiny gloVes, have been promenading in the big carrying bunches of violets, with a most sophisticated air.

Some of them are in costumes. One darling three xear old is in a full skirt that touches the gound of flowered silk, a tinv bodice witli a fichue on her little breast, little white and pow- ilered hair, 'rwo nurse rjiaiils or big listers witii her enjoy the sensation she creates, but slie herself is cnjoxing the big sunnv world. Little boys, as Pierrot.s, arc almost as darling as still smaller boys, in titiy uniforms or sailor One little girl about four years old trails a long crimson train she has quite forgotten to up across the street. Lucky the street has had its daily scrubbing. On our wav back from a long we made a iletour to (jucll park to see the new Catalanian work we have been reading about for the past ten or fifteen years.

rhe decorations are certainly fantastic enough, like the grotesque and twisted rocks, that make tlie background of the park itself, with all sorts of queer forms in rock and concrete heightened by queer colors in mosaic and cement. Hut every grove and corner of the park is filled with picnic parties. Troops, of small boys, are climbing impossible places; girls stop their games to wave and call to us. You think all liarcclona be up in the hills. And then, getting back to the city you tlecide to go, even though it is late, tt) the pageant of the children, of wliich you have been hearing, and then you know that all Hie children in Barcelona arc nifjre than any place except all Barcelona itself can hold.

Hie huge Olynqiia that holds about people, is full to the roof. 1 he big stage has been built forwatxi into the auditorium. All the children who are giving the program are on the stage at once, and that makes you think of nothitig so much as a glorified version For, except for a dozen or so in soft greer frocks scattered here and there, all the children, boys and girls alike, are in simplest costumes of various shades of daffodil yellow, little straight blouses, tor the boys, blouses slightly fuller with very short littTc skirts below them for the girls. Anything simpler, prettier, more full of heavenly grace and rhythmic joy, it doesn't fall to lot to see and hear, than these children in their singing-games. Barefooted and bare- armed, they weave with every changing second intricate vivid patterns of lovely lines.

Of course I cannot understand a word of the Catalan songs, but 1 need to. I'he long swinging the Nivid play tell their own story. Knights come to woo, the king gives his princess- daughter to the most gallant, and all sorts of folks bring gifts to the wedding. In one long singing-game, all Makes Her Skin Bleach Known for having one of the most beautiful skins in New York, Miss Ball, favorite and model, recently made the statement that most of the New York models use a skin bleach of their own making. According to Miss Bali, get three ounces of Orchard White from the druggist and add to it the juice of two lemons.

This makes a full quarter pint of a perfectly harmless xei marvelously effective bleach. Applied to face, neck and arms, it bleaches any dark or discolored skin a beautiful rosy white. It also makes any rough or coarse skin soft and smooth. Many of the girls use it, too, for a tan and freckle bleach. Nothing like this wonderful mixture can be bought ready to use because it acts best when freshly prepared.

The cost for several supply is only a few LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE: The Bowels of the Earth 'TVS' Cvjowes ViA GtT 'iVlNC'c OVE "WlbiT "Vo CiO different trades and crafts strive with each other for prizes. Presently a long green cloak over the yellow tunic transforms one of the boys into a lordly etnperor, who distributes his favors, one after another, to a group of girls, always giving the biggest rose, the brightest the longest feather, to the same charming smallest girl of all, with whom he finally marches proudly the stage while the former rivals miraculously turn to adoring followers of the princess. It is surprising to see how perfectly these simple costumes lend themselvess to instant tranforma- tion. Some short capes and jaunty caps, a few balls and hoops, for properties, and it is necesary only lo put two or three boys into costumes, and to give a high hat and a whip to have a fully equipped circus. A shift of lights, to a sort of violet-gray dimness, and long tow- bcards hanging from chins to little waists, and all the gnomes from the mountains work their magic to haunting music.

Perhaps the most charming moment of all the pageant was in The (iame of the Balloons, when, after a most lovely dance, in which one hardly ktiew whether the bright balloon above or the eager children below were gayest, the gay song touched a sudden cliniax, each little lifted hand relaxed, and the balloons went floating up to the high ceiling as the children danced and drifted off the stage. Barcelona seems to do the same thing that the Madrid symphony orchestra does to Beethoven, and that the early Spanish painters did to iheir versions of Italian idealism and of the serious realism of the northern artists. Whatever Spain takes to herself she transforms, by an unmeasured energy that may sometimes go wrong through misdirection, but that seems never to by an present powerful dramatic force. It is a long way from Dalcroze interpretative dancing as I happened to see it last in Philadelphia to this Barcelona afternoon where every moment of gayety and grace is full of spontaneous drama, as spontaneously shared by the audience. It is a longer from the New York Ninth Symphony advancing to its magnificent climax, to a interpretation, somewhat chaotic but interesting.

It would take a long while to understand or feel at home in this strange polygonal world, with all its contradictory angles. But any- tiody that cherishes an illusion that Spain is not again to be reckoned iwlth as a would better I go to a few concerts and plays in i Spain.
