18 I Saturday, September 18, 1965 The Ottawa Journal VARSITY BLANKS McGILL Mike Lebrun -1 By CLEM KEALEY of The Journal Matt Anthony's hopes of another championship season for. his Ottawa University football team "were given increased emphasis Friday night at Lansdowne Park before an estimated .6,000 boosters. For the third straight year the Ottawa unit challenged the superior Senior Interprovincial Football Union ndJTor the first time Ottawa won 7, and they won handily. EARLY CONCERN Anthony was concerned before this game that his club might not belong on the Montreal in the McGiU'Unl- versity Redmen. But his fears were doused rather early and quite convincingly as Ottawa took' control of the game early and expressed their superiority throughout, registering an 11-', 0 McGill won lris challenge match, 26-14la1year.

They came in with, a new coach and many 'new players, but they were woefully deficient in what turned out to be war of defences. Their offence; if not totally void cf imagination, was certainly lacking in that respect. i And after this laudable launching, the future looms "exceptionally bright for Ottawa in the Ontario Intercollegiate Football Conference schedule. Ottawa last won the conference crown in 1961. but they, should have a lot of things going for them this season.

Anthony enthused: "I knew we'd win one of these games some year but I never really expected to take this one!" -s The Ottawa coach was equally surprised by the power of his club and the ineptnessxof the Montreal twelve McGill has been, practising thrice daily since September 1st but their offence still requires a good deal more concentration. KJ Ottawa scored the' aameV onlv-toiichdown. on the final play of the first half and they had more than a few opportunities to pile it on in the final two quarters. This was without doubt a defensive war and so It was perhaps fitting. that a defenn sive halfback stole all the glamor from a rather phleg-, rrtatic, piece of entertainment.

Al Scanlon was the recipient of the only touchdown scored. Ottawa'TJ quarterback Steve Rogan completely only three of 12 passes but he connected at -opportune times. The winners' other points came on a pair of third quar- ter safety touches. Rogan boy with, fine -potential. Coach Anthony said Rogan missed a few practices, competing in the -Maccabiah games in Israel, but was enthusiastic about his potential. A few of passes tended to hang! but here is a boy that showed a mind aiv fine field leadership. Ottawa however, would do well to temper this win with caution.
