CORSICANA SEMI-WEEKLY LIGHT. FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 1942. BLACK HILLS YOUTH Courthouse News DOING GOOD JOB OF RAISING HEREFORDS A recent visit to Carmack Watkin's farm in Black Hills ccm- munity near Emhouse, shows that 4-H Club boy or Future Farmer can do a good job economically, raising and caring for high priced registered Carmack won Marcie Domino 17th, a registered Hereford heifer from the J. N. Edens herd la3t fall at the Corsicana Fair.

He was judged the best candidate, by the committee on special awards. Carmack had to run his heifer calf with his stock in a twenty-five acre improved pasture. With eighteen head of stock on this pasture the heifer has developed into a real good individual, at a cost of just a little over $5.00 for feed. She is in good flesh and growing good. Macie Domino 17th was bred to Edens Public Domino, a high priced bull of J.

N. Edens on Alarch 26, 1942. She will calve in January, 1943. Carmack feels like he will be in the money with either a bull or heifer calf, for the sire sold ior $2,500.00 just a few days ago. Carmack has been a good calf feeder for several years, both as a 4-H Club member and a Future I armer.

He is not new at the game when it comes to livestock ar 1 poultry raising. He has one more year in the Emhouse school. Carmack is proud of his registered Hereford, and will be glad for anyone to gee her. ECLIPSE VISIBLE TO MANY NORTHERN TEXANS DALLAS, Aug. Thanks to the weather man, many North Texans obtained a perfect view or last total eclipse of the moon, a celestial dimout that lasted one hour.

As the moon began to enter the shadow at 9 o'clock, clouds began breaking away and watchers could see the black sector of the shadow slowly eating into the moon's silver disk. By 10 o'clock the moon was completely enveloped in the shadow, although a twilight glow of sunlight retracted by the atmosphere left the lunar disc still visible as a big copper penny. When the moon at 11 started moving out of the shadow, a silver rim began to appear on the lower northern edge. Thii broadened gradually until the full moon again shone in Its full brilliance. DRIES UOtlim SET CHANGED MEN ONLY HOPE FOR PICE FOR DEDUCTION CHANGED WORLD AFTER IN ITS TM RATE LONGVIEW, Aug A fanfare of trumpets is In order for Grimes county on the basis of its new county budge: calling for a tax rate of only S8 cents for operating arposes, according to the Tax Department of the East Texas Chamber of Comrmrce. For debt service Grimes county levied an additional 62 cents. Grimes new butget calls for only 15c levy for th) general fund, three cents for the jury fund, 15 cents for the road and bridge fund, and five cents for the permanent improvement fund, This 38 cents total levy for op-' erating purposes is belisved by the East Texas Chamber to be the lowest for any of its 71 counties. Substantial reductions in spending were made to rrake this local charge to the taxpayers possible. Two cents were levied for general fund interest and sinking.

Thus only 17 cents out of the constitutional maximum of cents has been levied by county this year. With 11 cents levied 1 or road and bridge interest and sinking, only 26 cents out of the constitutional maximum 30 cents for all road and bridge purposes has been levied by this county. Only five cents out of the constitutional maximum of 25 cents for permanent improvement operating and interest and sinking purposes has been levied. Grimes county is on a cash basis. It is budgeted to stay on cash through 1943.

The county's valuations are approximately $10,300,000. INSTRUCTIONS FOR FALL PLANTING OF IRISH POTATOES Fertilizer mixed well into the soil is the first step in preparing for a fall crop of potatoes, says Vera Sneed, County Home Demonstration agent. Small potatoes from the spring crop, which have been kept in a cool place may be used as seed for fall planting, provided a rest period of six weeks is allowed between harvesting and planting As the fall crop requires 75 to 80 days to mature, planting should be made early enough so that the potatoes will be ready to harvest before heavy frost. Where it is not possible to irrigate, seed potatoes should not be allowed to sprout before planting. Sprouts may dry up for lack of moisture and retard the crop.

planting may be done in August by thoroughly preparing the soil, and planting the seed pieces four to five inches deep where there is a better chance for soil moisture. Seed potatoes smaller than a fifty cent piece should be planted whole. Those of a large size should be cut into pieces about half the size of a hen egg. Buie Implement Company 207-209 South Beaton Corsicana TEN THOCSAXD REPAIR PARTS FOR YOCB CONVENIENCE. There are periods in and this is one of it seems that a fresh start is made by the whole human race. The case of the Hebrew patriarchs is illustrative. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob represented a breakaway from the old order of things and a fresh start toward a new concep- tian of life. That is why so much attention is paid by the Bible to these three personalties.

We see them, superficially, as three very human individuals; but the inspired record regards them as the beginning of a new race and a new manner of life. Their seed were to continue as a power and as a problem throughout the ages; and newly acute in our day. It is 'awesome to contemplate the vast consequences wrapped up in the character and conduct of individuals. The three patriarchs left their permanent inpress upon a whole people; just as today the world problem is affected by the slackened morals of a recent gen- tration, as well as by the sturdy godliness of our remoter forefathers. He is a shallow thinker indeed who does not perceive the vital connection between the manner of life of a people and its rational destiny.

All the springs of history rise from the nature and behavior of individuals. A Man Outsmarted There had to be a great change in the Patriarch Jacob before the promised destiny of his line could be as there must be a fundamental change in most of us ere we are fit for a new world order. Jacob was naturally a rascal, crafty, sly, guileful, deceitful and sophisticated. His mind easily turned to tricks and statagems, for the promotion of his own profit. He deceived his father, he deceived his brother, he deceived his uncle; and he deceived himself.

Jacob was a representative of that class of persons to whom smartness means more than sincerity. But his very cleverness entangled him in a succession of troubles The Jacob chapters in Genesis are fiiller of life and action and human interest than any novel. The one noble quality of Jacob during his adventurous twenty years in Haran was his sincere love for Rachel. He offered to serve her father seven years for her; only to find that Uncle Laban had switched brides on him. forcing him to marry first older sister, the sore-eyed Leah.

The record of the jealousy and strife of these two rival wives would satisfy the most romantic reader of hectic fiction. Poor Jacob was caught in the midst of perpetual family quarrels, and the cunning of the grasping uncle Laban. But throughout all, love for Rachel persisted. A Scared Man As Jacob had run away from Beersheba, in fear of his wronged brother Esau, so fright haunted his days in Haran. By trickery, he had become more prosperous than Laban.

But menacing clouds began to appear on the faces of the uncle and cousins So flight was again in order for wandering Jacob. He sneaked away, with his wives and children and many possessions, and got three start of Laban, who, however, eventually caught up with the fugitives, There was high quarrelling, with loud words and recriminations and counter-recriminations. One grievance of Laban was that the household gods, or terephim, had been stolen. Rachel was the thief, but she successfully concealed her loot. After the hot fury of the quarrel was over, Laban proposed a conven- ant.

It was between two men who did not trust each other. They erected a pile of stones as witness, and called it By a strange perversity of understanding, the name and the oath are now, used as a term of tender remembrance and benediction between friends: "The Lord watch between me and thee, when 006000000000000000! Sunday School Lea- son for August 30 is, God's oaoooooooooooooooo we are absent om another. The original rr in the minds of these who! men was. Lord keep His eye upon you when you are out of my sight, and restrain you from practicing any more of your One Enemy After Another With Laban off his mind, Jacob had to face the prospect of meeting his brother, as he moved into territory. He sent messengers forward with conciliatory messages, only to learn that Esau was on the road toward him with four hundred men.

Panic filled the timorous heart of Jacob. He divided his outfit into two parts, that one might be saved should the other fall before Esau. Like most of us in extremity, he turned to the God of his fathers, and with contrition and confession pleaded for deliverance from Esau. Then he planned a succession of envoys with rich gifts, to go one after the other to Esau, and overwhelm him with bounties. The device succeeded; impulsive Esau was not one to hold a grudge permanently.

Wrestling Jacob In the midst of these negotiations, Jacob had an experience which changed his whole life. It was at the Ford of the Brook Jabbok, a site I have visited. There was no sleep for Jacob, as he anxiously awaited news from Esau; and we may picture him walking, fearfully and restlessly, outside of his encampment. There he encountered a man who whestled with him until dawn. The story is mysterious; and it personifies all the soul-struggling experiences of mankind.

Something always follows when a man comes to grips with God, desiring a spiritual boon so greatly that he will not yield until he receives it. In case it was the great change, from his old nature to a new. He got a new name with the blessir.g, a prince with God, instead of the supplanter. The midnight encounter was one of the turning points of history; for it put the impress of God upon Jacob and his line. And only God- mastered men can master the new world that awaits us.

With all our shrewd comments upon the war, and upon post-war problems, there seems to be a singular lack of discernment of the profound basic truth that only the help of the living God can give victory and a permanent peace. We need desperately to reenforce the prayer front. WRIGHT EXPLAINS LATEST CHANGE IN SUGAR RATIONING In response to numiroui Inquiries, Chairman Wilbur A. Wright of the Navarro County war price and rationing board explained Wednesday' morning that the unni- ber 8 stamp of the war rationing book Is now effective for the purchase of five pounds of sugar.

This amount must suffice until October 31, he cautioned, aaserting that actually this is not an increase in allotment. He announced to institutional users that certificates for the purchase of sugar for the months of September and October are now available at the rationing office. Allotment of sugar to institutions, such as cafes, bakeries, and is now 80 per cent of the base or the amount used in normal times. Chairman Wright stated that applications for canning sugar had declined considerably in past few days. During July the rationing board iaaued 2.900 canning sugar for the purchase of a total of 99,139 pounds of Sugar.

A similar amount was released during the month of June, he said June and conatitute the main canning season, he added. fowr first introduction should tell you WHY BLACK- DRAUGHT If ST SELLING LAXATIVE ill met the South SEVEN SENTENCE SERMONS Be good, and leave the rest to Heaven.
