July were hesitant at the opening of short market, but improved later. The moderate inqriry was restricted to independent steels, low priced coalers, olis, Marine preferred and specialties, at gains of one to twe points. United States Steel advanced a large fraction to its highest quotation of the week, tut failed to hold. The closing was firm. Sales approximated 200,000 sh'ores.

Liberty sold at 99 5-16 to 99.62; first -is at 94.08 to 91.16; second 4s at 94.12 to 94.1« and at 96.18 to 96.22. Nominal and iricgular were recorded at the orering of stock market, leaders showing no decided tone. Dealings were of the lightest character. Liberty bonds were steady. N.

Kansas City, July German Liner Is Sent to Bottom. Washington, D. July 6 having- landed several thousand soldiers in France, the American transport Covington was sunk in the war zone by a torpedo last Monday night. Six members of the crew are missing, but all others on board were saved. There were no army personnel or passengers on the Covington, The Covington, formerly was the Hamburg American liner Cincinnati, which was laid up at Boston and taken over when the United States entered the war.

She was 608 feet long, of gross tonnage, and had a speed of 15 2 knots an hour. The Covington is the second of the Great German liners seized at the outbreak of the war to be sent down by seawolves and is'the third American troop ship to be destroyed. All were homeward bound. The former Hamburg American liner President Lincoln was sunk last May 31, and the Antilles, formerly a Morgan liner, was sent down last October 17. QUARTERMASTER GORMAN PROMOTED TO RANK Maj.

All proof Ph. my dh read. NEW HOSPITAL FORT BUSS Plans Ready for $25,000 Building; Red Cross to Erect Hostess House. A large brick hospital thoroughly modern, ith a capacity of 10ft0 beds, may soon be built at Fort Bliss, an addition to the base hospital there, according to information received from military suorces. The plans for the hospital and auxiliary buildings have been forw'arded to the surgeon general of the army for approval.

Several weeks ago an officer from the surgeon office and one from the quartermaster office were at Fort Bliss and 'went over the ground where the proposed hospital will be built. Plans were submitted to Gen. Robert L. Howze, commanding the El Paso district, and later sent to Washington for approval, it was reported. The present hospital at Fort Bliss has a capacity of about 600 patients.

There are about 30 medical officers on duty. The proposed improvement will cost more than $25,000. To Have our An improvement being considered for Fort Bliss is a Red Cross annex, or hostess house. This building is to be built in the near future, on ground immediately south of the present base hospital.
