EL PASO HERALD 5 Senator Reed Says Gross Extravagance in Food Administration Department. Washington, D. March Charges of gross extravagance in the management of the affairs of the food administration, were made in the senate today by senator Reed of Missouri, who demanded that food administrator Hoover give an accounting of the finances. The charges were made after the Missouri senator had asked that the appropriation of $1,750,000 for the food and fuel administration be eliminated from the urgent deficiency bill. Says Never Such all the history of this government there never has been sudh wastefulness as Is now going on in the food declared senator Reed.

drunken sailor never threw money around as this administration now is Senator Reed said that at a hearing on January 21 before a house committee, representatives of the food administration testified that the department then had an unexpended balance of $1,257,950 and added that with this sum on hand it was difficult to understand why congress was called on to make an additional sum as emergency appropriation. ful success everywhere. It is relieving rheumatism, expelling humors, restoring lost appetite, giving the glow of health to the cheeks, making faces bright and complexions clear, and literally giving worn-out, brain-fagged people new ambition and the strength of iron For it combines that most useful of all a course of medicine that is peculiarly effective. Sarsaparilla is made from an unsurpassed formula of blood-purifying and stomach-toning remedies, and Peptiron from pepsin, iron, nux and Rice Flour Is On Sale As Substitute Price Committee Reduces Price on Potatoes Two Bits Per 100. The arrival of rice flour on the El Paso market at seven and a half cents a pound, and the reduction in price of potatoes of 25 cents per 100 pounds, was announced by the local price interpreting committee at a meeting Monday afternoon. The reduction in price of potatoes was $1.90 to $2.25 per hundred in wholesale lots, instead of $2 to $2.40.

The retail price will be $2.50 to $2.75 a hundred instead of $2.75 to $3 as heretofore. There were no other price changes. Discussion as to the availability of mountain potatoes from Cloudcroft, N. brought out assertions that potatoes raised there are higher in price than potatoes raised elsewhere, and that they do not keep as readily as other varieties. The next meeting of the committee will be held Thursday afternoon, and it is probable that that day will be fixed as a regular weekly meeting day for the committee and that the present semiweekly meetings will probably be cut down to one a week.

Tuesday, designated by the federal food administration as meetless day, is being observed by the meat dealers of El Paso, by the closing of all markets. Grocers were selling no canned meats, bacon, hams or lard. "4YS FOOD ADMINISTRATION TELLS PACKERS WHAT TO PAY Washington, D. March Charges that food administration agents instructed the packers as to prices they should pay for livestock were made today before the senate agriculture committee by Edward F. Keefer, of Chicago, a stock commission merchant.

E. Dana Durand, formerly chief of the census bureau and now associated with the food administration at Chicago as purchaser of meats for the allies, instructed J. E. Wilhelm, a representative of the Cudahy interests, to keep the prices down until a supply of beef had been to Great Britain, Keefer testified. Delegates to Convention at Las Vegas Favor Control by the Government.

East Las Vegas, N. March Iif the government would take over control of the meat packing industry during the war, so as to assure the producer permanent open competition, independent packing plants would spring up all through the west, according to opinions expressed today before the opening of the annual convention of the Cattle and Horse association, which convened this afternoon. There are about 1U00 persons interested in the cattle, horse and sheep industry in the southwest in attendance, with the result that sleeping accommodations are at a premium. There is not a room to be had at any of the hotels, and practically every private home in the city and west Las Vegas has been thrown open to the visitors. The inability of Gov.

W. E. Lindsey to reach hero this morning, being delayed enroule from Linda Vista, where he witnessed the review of the troops there last week, caused the opening session to be delayed until this afternoon. The association will endorse every act of the government in the conservation of food. A state police to protect cattle on ranges from thieves and animals will be asked.

MONEY CLEARING HOUSE FOR RAILROADS PLANNED Washington, D. March of the first acts of the railroad administration after enactment of the pending railroad bill will be to create a financial accounting clearing house to facilitate the government compensation of companies on the basis of the average annual net income of the last three years, provided by the bill. This clearing house method, it was explained today at offices of director general McAdoo will enable roads to use directly most of their receipts for ordinary expenses, and to turn over to the government fund each month only the surplus of income over the amount of the government guarantee. On the other hand, roads whose actual income is less than the guarantee will receive credit from the fund. GREEK AGAIN DEPORTED.

Alex Goches, believed by government agents to be a Greek, who was held at the Santa Fe international bridge Monday when he attempted to come into the country, was deported in the morning and again attempted to cross the river by swimming, was later in the day deported the second time. Former United States Senator Mason, Pioneer Pure Food and Drugs Legislation, Father of Rural Free Delivery System Says Nuxated Iron Increased His Power and Endurance so Much, That He Feels It Ought to Be Made Known to Every Nervous, Rundown, Anaemic Man, Woman, and Child. Opinions of Dr. Ferdinand King, New York Physician and Medical Author; Dr. Janies Francis Sullivan, formerly Physician of Bellevue Hospital (Outdoor Dept.) However, after the hardest political campaign of my life, without a chance for a vacation, I had been starting to court every morning with that horrible tired feeling one cannot describe. 1 was advised to try luxated Iron. As a pioneer in the pure food and drug legislation, I was at first loath to try an advertised remedy, but after advising with my medical I gave it a test. The results have been so beneficial in my owrn case, I made up my mind to let my friends know about it, and you are at liberty to publish this statement if you so desire. I am now 65 years of age and I feel that a remedy which will build up the strength and increase the power of endurance of one at my age, should be known to the world.

Yours very truly, The bill providing for restoring jurisdiction in misdemeanor cases to the county court, thus making its jurisdiction in this respect concurrent writh that of the county court at law, this bill having been introduced in the state legislature by representative R. E. Thomason, was framed by county attorney W. H. Fryer and judge P.

Brady, of the county court at law, their object being to provide more expeditious machinery for disposing of raid cases. The matter was settled by the officials named before the latest cleanup agitation and the bill was sent to Austin ten days ago, the governor promising that it would 'receive prompt attention. Prompt Disposal. When the bill becomes a law, it will be the means of more prompt disposal of all cases arising out of cleanup raids. In practice, it will work out as follows: All complaints will be fied in the county court at law and wrhen the docket of the latter becomes crowded, the surplus will be transferred to the county court, presided over by judge E.

B. Mc6Clintock, for trial. The county court at law will not be so crowded in the future, however, as a new law enacted by the legislature makes selling liquor without a license a felony, instead of merely a misdemeanor. Under the old law, these cases were tried in the county court at law, but under the new law they will have to be tried in the district court. Collects 85000 In Pines.

Judge docket has been cleared of all old liquor cases, except one, nearly $5000 in fines having been collected last term from cases of this kind. Copies of the new law have not yet been received in El Paso, and county attorney Fryer has wired to Austin for a copy at once, in order that the terms of the law might be known and it may be made effective here at the earliest possible date. HUGO WEALTH Charles Newman Tells the Realtors of Possibilities for Trade There. Speaking on what northern Mexico means to El Paso, Charles M. Newman, local real estate owner, told the members of the El Paso Realty board at luncheon Tuesday that the mining resources of the states of Chihuahua and Durango were greater than those of New Mexico and Arizona combined.

He spoke of the possibilities of irrigation farming in the Encinillas valley, 75 miles south of the border. He prophesied that after conditions had been cleared up in Mexico, the packing house investment in El Paso would be as great as those at Fort Worth, and said in this connection that the mild climate of the border states is favorable to the largest calf crop. Stevens Compares Rentals. Horace B. Stevens, speaking on rental conditions in this city, divided the lease contracts into residential, mercantile and tenement designations.

He compared rents today with those of pioneer days, when they were much lower, and gave technical points of interest to rental operators. President Charles H. Leavell was absent and George R. LeBaron, secretary, suggested subjects for the betterment of real estate owners and operators, some of which wrill be distributed among board members for discussion at future meetings. Senator Mason has the distinction of being one of the really big men of the nation.

His strong endorsement of Nuxated Iron must convince any intelligent thinking reader that it must be a pi eparation of very merit and one which the Senator feels is bound to be of great value to the masses of people everywhere otherwise he could not afford to lend his name to it, especially after his strong advocacy of pure food and drugs legislation.
