There nre fewer Spaniah-Amerf- onn than in any previous state legislature. It will have Bertha M. Paxton, Democrat, of Dona Ana county, the first woman who has ever been elected to a New Mexico legislature. The division of powers, after the inauguration of Gov James P. Hinkle, Democrat, and the convening of the legislature, will mean a division of responsibility as well.

It will not be possible for either branch of the legislature to enact laws in which the other branch does not concur. Hope for Fewer Laws. Under these circumstances, it Is There is little reason to fear that Gov. Hinkle will veto any measure on which senate and house agree. It is not anticipated that Gov.

Hinkle will have any trouble in getting confirmation by the Republican senate of his The senate is composed largely of men who hold the best interests of New Mexico above partisanship. The decision in Guadalupe county was close. Frank Faircloth, Republican, is elected by a majority of two votes. He was opposed by John H. Hicks, veteran livestock grower.

The percentage of unrecovered stolen automobiles stolen in the United States is steadily increasing. OIL LIGHT BEATS ELECTRIC OR GAS By A Mil I ASHINGTON, D. Nov. political pot of trouble is boiling. There's a good deal going on beneath the surface to indicate that the results of last election have been seriously taken to heart here.

Some of the disturbance, however, bears a relationship to 1H24, and would have come irrespective of the way the elections turned. Senator McCormick, of Illinois, it develops, intend his letter to senator Lodge about the abolition of the seniority rule on committee chairmanships to be regarded as a casual piece ol academic politics. Jle meant it concretely. Medill letter was a symptom of revolt. Being a miid mannered man and a diplomat, the Illinois senator broke tne news gently to the senior senator from Massachusetts, but the real truth is dissatisfaction with Mr.

leadership has been growing and the socailed progressive group ol senators from the west have become restive. Mr. McCormick is trying to suggest a graceful way of choosing a new leader in the senate. He asks that all committee chairmanships be revised and subject to election by members irrespective of seniority, but vvliat he reaily hopes is that the entire leauership of the senate, including that of Mr. Lodge, oi the Republican party, will be changed.

Mr. McCormick prefers evolution to revolution. In many a trying situation he has endeavored to act as mediator between the western Republicans and the easterners. Ha anticipates revolt. Election Seems Assured.

The Illinois senator campaigned most of the time in the west. He is not up for reelection until two years hence, but Republican politics in his home state is in such-shape that his election seems assured. Mr. McCormick spent all of his time outside of Illinois in the neighboring states. Althouh Smith W.

Brookhart made it plain in Iowa that he and Harding were on opposite side of the fence, nevertheless senator McCormick made several speeches urging the election of Mr. Brooklieart. In Nebraska, Mr. McCormick was found urging the election of another radical Republican, R. E.

Howell. In the senate, Mr. McCormick works in close harmony with senator Capper of Kansas, senator Hiram Johnson of California, and maintains intimate relations with all the radicals and progressives. lie is a keen judge of trends in politics and is impatient to see AH HENCE. the younger men In the saddle In the senate.

Mr. Lodges is in the seventies. His health has not been good. There are no flaws to find with his doctrines, for as Republican leader he has tried to play the role of harmonizer, but to lead the senate today with its conflicting types and cross currents of opinion, from east and west, an aggressive personality is needed and party discipline is an absolute essential. Mr.

McCormick thinks party harmony will come when the party functions in the senate as a progressive body with its ablest men in the committee chairmanships irrespective of how long they have been in these ate. McCormick wrote his letter and went off to Europe. He wanted'to let it sink in a while. Other senators want changes. Inderwood Is HI.

Senator Underwood, the Democratic leader, is resigning that position because of ill health, but mostly because, capable man that he is, the tasks of a leader are too much for him at this time. Senator Simmons of North Carolina may take his place. The Democrats will naturally be active as a minority party. They have been heartened by the elections. Mr.

Simmons is an authority on tariff. The Republicans will not be able to shelve that issue, much as they may try. The Democrats mean to keep it alive. It will take a younger and more flexible personality to lead the Republican party in the senate when the fight begins. Meanwhile president Harding recognizes that the record which is made in the special and regular sessions of congress will affect chances 01 the Republican party as a whole in He needs shrewd and effective lead- sliip in both Representative Mondell, who has been defeated, will not be a member of congress after March 4.

The aspirants for leader are many. A new deal in both the and house would help Mr. Harding at this juncture. Thus far he hasn't expressed himself, but the return of congress next week will bring party conferences at which questions like those must be disposed of or the moraie of the parly in congress will 1922, by David Lawrence.
