18 Week-End Edition, January 22-23, 1921 EL PASO HERALD AUTOMOBILE AUTO SHOW OPENS IN EL PASO APRIL 7 he automobile dealers of Paso will stage their 1921 show in Liberty hall April 7, 8 and 9. The show committee has leased the hall for four days, starting April 6. The extra day is for the purpose of decorating: and placing exhibits. Last year all work for the automobile show was stopped at 6 p. m.

the day before the opening, the hall had been rented for a big danre that night. This worked considerable handicap, as the nad to he run into the hall after midnight and the decorators were pushed to the limit to have the hall ready for the opening of the show on time. 144 the commissioners because the weight of the motor cars did sertous damage to the floor. At a meAing in judge court last Tuesday, however, the commissioners relented, upon the guarantee of the automobile dealers to make good any damages caused by the show. According to F. M. Bannell, chairman of the automotive division of the chamber of commerce, this i.s only fair, as the principal revenue derived from the hall is for dances, which cannot be held on rough floors.

O. C. Youngblood is chairman of the show committee and says full details and the time sqt for space drawing will be announced in the near future. The committee has decided that passenger car dealers shall have first with ample space to exhibit Meir different models. It hopes to nave enough space left in the nooks and corners to accommodate the accessory and specialty firms.

The first meeting of the show committee will be called next week. The show Is to be conducted under the auspices of the automotive division of the chamber of commerce. 'EDITOR TWO CONCERNS The United Motor Supply company has been split into two firms. Formerly the entire establishment, consisting of a garage, Vesta battery station and Samson tire depot, was under the ownership and management of George Lopez.

He has always considered the Samson tire his pet hobby and was anxious to give up the management of the garage. Last week he disposed of the garage and battery service station to W. M. Boswell, of El Pa.so, former owner of the Auditorium parage. Mr.

Boswell will operate under the name of United Motor Supply and Garage company, Mr. Lopez will occupy a portion of the building and retain the name United Motor Supply company, southwestern distributor for the Samson line of tires. Parmelee has returned to El Paso after an absence of seven months spent in New Orleans. Mr. Parmelee is El oldest automobile battery man in point of service. Twenty-two years ago, when automobiles were first beginning to attract attention he opened an electrical service station here. Later he formed the Parmelee Battery and Ignition company, which was absorbed by the El Paso Battery and Ignition company in 1919.

He did not visit the factories nor Chicago automobile shows as expected.

Mr. Perry spoke enthusiastically of his visit to the New York show. lie said: visit was worth while In every way. The exhibitions were wonderful and the talk I heard on all sides points to a positive shortage of all the popular makes by the middle of March. This shortage is already being felt in some models.

Phone 71 North and South Road To Be Built In Arizona Motorists touring In Arizona have often wondered at the absence of a north and south highway across the state. The lack of such a i ad has limited much travel to the Santa trail that otherwise would have struck off to the south for a tour of central Arizona to Phoenix. Plans are under way, however, for building a highway from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. The road from Williams on the Santa Fe trail north to El Tovar on the rim of the canyon is reasonably good, but the stretch south to Phoenix is little more than a road in name.

The route is through a scenic country that has few superiors anywhere in the west, particularly in Black canyon, south of Prescott. Two years ago a pair of Goodyear trucks en route from Prescott to Phoenix encountered a party of cattlemen on a roundup at Bumble Bee. on Black Canyon But the purposes of the Goodyear party, when explained to the cowpunchers, elicited from them only expressions of surprise and pity. The truck would never reach Phoenix. They would never even gain the top of the next mountain, just to the south of them, and when the drivers expressed their intention of continuing their journey, the cattleihen laughed In derision at such foolhardiness.

The party got through, however, after two battle with mountain trails and desert sands. The route which they traversed Is the one which the proposfg improvement concex4is. AUTO 24 YEARS OLD IS DUG UP FOR BIG SHOW The business section of New York City witnessed a unique spectacle last week when the second oldest Haynes automobile, carrying as passengers mayor Hylan of New York, Alton G. Seiberling of the Haynes Automobile company and Col. Elmer Thompson of the Automobile Club of America, chugged its way down the main thoroughfares of the metropolis.

Thousands of busy New Yorkers stared in amazement at the sight of the ancient horseless carriage conveying the highest official of Gothur. from the city hall to the Grand Central Palace, where the automobile show was in progress. Amazement turned to laughter and laughter to cheers as the significance of the event dawned on the spectators. This same Haynes car 24 years ago threaded its more or less uncertain way over the same streets, and undoubtedly caused as much commotion then as it did at this time. It was a great sight.

The old automobile with its surrey top, high, wagon like wheels, queer seats, sputtering two-cylinder motor and antiquated radiator caused a furore in every block of its resurrectional march. Clerks leaned out of office building windows to watch it. Taxi drivers slackened their mad pace as the warning bell on the old juggernaut clanged. Crossing policemen dubiously scratched their chins not knowing whether to arrest the thing and then, seeing their chief In the front seat, saluted stiffly. Word of the old progress spread swiftly In the big city and soon the motion picture men were grinding out yards of of the event, while the camera men from the New York dallies clicked the shutters of their machines.

Arriving at the auto show, mayor Hylan thanked Mr. for the ride in the old Haynes that was the forerunner of the present gigantic automotive industry, and then went inside the Grand Central Palace to look at the new 1921 cars. AUTO BODIES SHOWING BIG IMPROVEMENT According to the generally accepted rule, when there Is keen competition there Is greater engineering advancement than In times when sales resistance Is nil. The last year has seen a vast amount of auto development work. It is plain to see that mechanical excellence Is beginning to be the chief aim of the builder.

Body work Is better, to be sure, but for some time the chassis has been neglected so the car may be made better looking. Changes In body lines are slight compared with 1920, but body detail has been bettered all through. The cars as a whole are larger disappointing feature Is that the average car Is somewhat heavier. There are more four-cylinder cars than there were last year, more sixes as well; the engines show slightly greater power and more attention has been paid to carburetlon. Improvements are to be noted fn cooling system and in lubrication. The plate and disc clutches have gained again. Hotchkiss drive has made an increase and three-speed transmissions located apart from the engine have gained slightly. Frames are stlffer, springs about the same with Improved mountings and wire and disc wheels accepted by more makers for standard equipment. The engine characteristics, as a whole, have changed somewhat.

The average power output is greater, around 53 horsepower at 2270 revolutions per minute. Does a storage battery frequently become overcharged In the average automobile? to Last Q.nestlonn. 1. Traction resistance Is the friction which exists betwen the wheels of the car and the road and is caused by weight of the car bearing upon these wheels. It is one of the forms of resistance which must be overcome before the car can be propelled, other forms of resistance are grade resistance and wind resistance. To overcome these forms of resistance the only power in the engine necessary to drive the car is that which will move it horizontally, while to overcome the resistance of the grade enough power must be supplied by the engine to lift the weight of the car against the force of gravity.

To overcome wind resistance, or rather a combination of traction and wind resistance as they impede the progress of the car together, the engine must have enough power to carry the car weight against the wind. 2. Always disengage the clutch fully before applying brakes either on a hill or on level road. If the clutch Is not disengaged the breaks will not only stop the car speed but will also tend to retard engine speed. Brakes are designed only to stop the momentum of the car when the rear wheels are fre of tlie engine.

Braking the car speed with clutch engaged simply adds wear to brake fabric and will not stop the car as quickly. 3. An audible squeak is seldom heard in an engine if It comes from within the cylinder. It is unusual and very noticable and is usually caused by lack of oil In the crank case causing the bearings or cylinder walls to become dry and hot. 4.

If the car will not coast freely with gears or clutch disengeged it Indicates binding In bearings of the front wheels or some part of the rear axle. Usually the cause is due to the brakes which have not been set to that the bands are fro of the brake drum. 5. Hard shifting of transmission gears is usually caused by the clutch which will not cease when lever or some trouble within the gear case which will not allow the gears to slide or mesh properly. 6.

A clutch Is necessary In the gasoline automobile because the gas engine must be cranked and must be running smoothly before It will pull against a load. If no clutch were used the car with the gas engine would have to be stalled and restarted In order to again put the car in motion. With the electric car the real source of power Is In the storage battery and Is not called upon until the car is put underway. Therefore, all that l3 necessary to start Is merely to switch on the power which In turn drives the electric motor propelling the car. This motor does not run when the car Is not In motion, therefore no clutch Is necessary.

7. Because of the fact that almost all roads are oval or rounded the highest part of the road being In the center, the right rear wheel Is more likely to leak grease from the differential than the left. Because in all American cities motor cars are driven at the right of the road which brings the right wheel to a lower level than the left, naturally the oil, thinner because of churning by the differentials, flows to the lowest level of the axle which is the right rear wheeL 8. Noisy low or reverse speeds of the planetary system is caused by wear of the gear teeth of these speeds, of bearings or of the brake drums. Noise may result also if a poor grade of oil Is used In the gear case.

Poor oil does not have sufficient body to soften or cushion the action' of these gears and both noise and wear will result. 9. Stiff movement of the staering gear Is usually due to dry bearings in the steering at the front iixle or at the joints at each end of the tie bar, also if the worm gear located at the end of the stearing column and the gears with which it engages are without grease. 10. About the only trouble of the thermo syphon cooling system which would cause overheating of an engine would be closed connections between radiator before blaming the cooling system for engine overheating, because lack of water invariably is the cause.
