PAGE 2, THE WACO CITIZEN, TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 1985 Institutionalization Of Aged Parent: Family Reaction Barbara Silvcrstone in her book, You And Your Aging Parents, gives reason to pause and consider feelings family members experience when institutionalization of an elderly parent becomes inevitable. She writes, is not always easy to look at feelings and accept them. They may be unconscious, or may seem so shameful that it is easier to bury them. Many of us do not realize that there is room for such a wide variety of feelings toward people we are close to. Buf if those feelings are not faced and accepted, they can stimulate Other feelings even more The concept of institutionalization means different things to different people.

This is particularly true for an elderly parent and family. Family members invariably perceive this concept to mean something different to each one. The decision to enter a long-term facility is an intensive psychological experience for an aged parent. Placement is an important step for both the parent and members of the family, tho it affects them differently. In my experience the most common reactions noted is the fear of a final separation from parent, guilt, and fear of aging of both parent and adult children. With these feelings, the family tends to think of itself as having failed its parent. The ability and the degree to which children adjust to this change depends in part upon the kind of relationship that has existed between them and with their parent in the early stages of development.

In addition to family members experiencing an array of feelings associated with the placement of their parent, they also have to deal with a new factor about which they have little knowledge or staff of the long-term care facility. Families may express anger towards staff and parent, resentment, guilt and demanding behavior. They may show in passive ways their frustration and desperation. As family and staff come to understand and appreciate the commonality of goals and clarify the roles and responsibilities of each, they become partners in the treatment of the parent. IS BACK!
