Lindsay and her classmates were charged with examining mesh traps salamander hotels that were placed in the shallow stream a month ago. The students extracted the salamanders from the traps, took measurements, weighed the creatures and then released them. Some 2,500 salamanders have already been evaluated in the program. One of Lindsay's first catches was tiny and quickly named "Sam It checked in at 3.1 centimeters and weighed a quarter of a gram.

students, along with three volunteers, landed seven salamanders in the first eight of 20 traps.
