"Dr. Dolittle" made its debut in first place at the North American box office, while "Mulan," in which he's the voice of a wisecracking dragon, was No. 2. "Dr. Dolittle," which stars Murphy taking over the character played by Rex Harrison in the 1967 version, earned an estimated $29 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend, according to industry estimates Sunday.

In the latest release, computer-generated special effects allow the animals' mouths to move as they talk. The film's opening surpassed Murphy's "The Nutty Professor," the actor's last comedy. "We're happy that we achieved such a broad audience," said "Dr. Dolittle" producer John Davis. "We've got older people, younger people, teen-agers loving it It's gratifying because this was supposed to be a broadly appealing movie." "Mulan" earned $17.3 million! for the No.

"Mulan" fell only 24 percent from its opening weekend, surpassing Disney's usual decrease of between 30 and 40 percent, said Phil Barlow, president of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. Although the anguish of both -Mptttfents is portrayed effectively, 'the ethical questions raised are given short shrift. In order for the donor heart to be preserved, the baby must "die" clinically, but be kept "alive" physically. After Karen's baby is born, she begins to stop breathing, is pro-nounced dead and is then hooked up to a respirator. Though a controversial procedure, it's done without outside objection or intervention in the movie. That point aside, "Heart of a Child" is a stirring story with final scenes that are guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes.

Late in their pregnancies, Karen Schouten (Michele Greene) and Alice Hole (Anne Jillian) are told by doctors that babies will survive only a few days after birth. Tests show Karen's daughter will be born missing part of her brain. Alice's sort will have a terminal heart condition. Karen and her husband I confess though it's hardly a secret it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to TV movies. So when a good one comes around in reruns, I try to be generous.

Tonight you can tune ift ja TV movie that's worthy because it does exactly what it sets out to do: Touch your heart with a true" story that is as real as life gets. She cautions Preston about fate. Then, the geek becomes a rock star; t'he prom queen shows intelligence; and the jock meets with misfortune.

While these outcomes are predicable, the psychosis is appealing. What we learn is that today's telfns are not that different from past generations. Some are headed for disaster. Other are career bound. Most find themselves stuck in the middle, dealing with the fact thareality may bite but life is what you make it.

Can't, Hardly Wait is a good teen flick because it has a useful mix of humor, discontent, and candor. The message may not be visionary. The storyline may not be Ozzie and Harriet. But the mindless antics and weird personalities make Can't Hardly Wait a nice distraction. Green) arrives.

He's looking for any girl who will have him. Green's (Radio Days) acting is somewhat enjoyable, even though his character is empty. The class smart aleck is played by Laureen Ambrose. She shows up to point out the hypocrisy. While her sarcasm is old, her presence adds punch.

Can't Hardly Wait is best when it unravels the teenage mind. All the important issues are addressed: peer pressure, relationship conflicts, distrust of authority, individualismand identity dilemmas. The dance party acts like teenage nirvana for a while. Its unraveling is slow but we're entertained by the unhappi-ness. It begins when the warina-be rapper gets locked in the bathroom with the smart aleck.

Later, Jenna Elfman A lanky nerd (Charlie Kormo) arrives at the party. He devises a plan to humiliate Mike, the egotistical jock (Peter Facinelli) who has tormented him in school. Mike makes an appearance. He tries to humiliate his ex-girlfriend (Jennifer Love Hewitt). He also tries to convince his buddies to dump their girlfriends.

Preston (Ethan Embry), a regular, nice guy, is there. His goal is to get a date with the prom queen, Amanda (Hewitt). He has hadacrushonherforfouryears. This part of the film works a lot like Say Anything except these characters aren't witty. Hewitt's wide-eyed acting is similar to her role on "Party of Five." She may be likable on "P05," but she doesn't stand out here.

Can't Hardly Wait compresses the spirit of these films into one night of lewd adolescence, Even though we've seen the jokes and characters before, the result is harmless. Most of the film concentrates oxi running gags or high school pranks. Can't Hardly Waitl843 is a colorful high school romp now playing Manhattan.

The film takes place at a dance party. A group of dissatisfied teens celebrate their high school graduation. Several character types are represented at the party: a nerd, a prom queen, ajock.aniceguy', and a smart aleck. All have obstacles to their goals. Most learn that the trials of high school have significance.
