8G -August 25, 1974 Mail -Charesion Virginia- Glenville Has 11 Starters Back Football games are not won by offense alone. This tried and true axioro was underlined by Glenville last fall in carrying the West Virginia Conference football banner all the way to the NAIA Division I1 championship game. back over the course of the 12 games we played." reflected Glenville coach Bill Manlin. 2.2 vards we allowed from the line of scrimmage on running plays was the highlight of the season from my standpoint." Glenville closed the books on a 10-2 campaign with a 10-3 loss at the hands of Northwestern from Orange. lowa.

in the championship game. Its other setback was administered in the conference's first North-South playoff game by Fairmont. 21-7. at Parkersburg. By Bob Fretwell "Don't ask me what to expect this year." Hanlin said.

"We went through the regular season undefeated (including a win over Fairmont) and couldn't win the conference title." NEVERTHELESS, Glenville is stocked with 24 lettermen. including 11 starters. from the 1973 roster. Among those returning from the proud defensive unit is AllConference end Willie Marshall and the pitch-and-catch combination of quarterback Chris Anderson and Steve Buffington is intact. Anderson passed for 16 touchdowns and Buffington latched on eight last year when Glenville matched its overpowering defense with a potent attack.

Once again. Glenville appears to be the most logical choice to win the conference's South division and play the North survivor in the second annual Shrine Bowl playoff Nov. 16 at Parkersburg. Fairmont's Bill Kerr, who coached the Falcons back to prominence in his second season. guided his team to its seventh conference championship last year.

Fairmont's first six titles came under the man Kerr replaced. Harold. "Deacon" Duvall. Fairmont entertains Shepherd Aug. 31 in a tipoff of North division potential.

"Over-all, we have a lot of people back who played good football for us last year," Kerr said, "but we pretty nearly lost our offensive line." All-Conference safety Roger Johnson returns on defense. "Galambus has all the tools mechanically," Kerr said. but anytime a new quarterback takes over, it's a time to be a bit cautious on predictons." Fairmont is rated in some quarters as the real power of the conference this fall.

BILL HANLIN Clencitle Couch CONCORD WAS at the opposite end of the spectrum. from Glenville and Fairmont in 1973 with a winless ninegame drought. What's more, the Mountain Lions scored 62 points and was buried under the opposition's 310. "Was. it that bad," winced Tony Colobro.

Colobro formerly coached Bluefield State seven years. "We're going to have to count an awful lot en youth since we projected only 22 kids returning." Colobro said. One veteran counted on in Colobro's massive rebulding project is Alex Castaneda, who caught 30 passes in 1973. In addition to Colobro. new coaches will field teams at West Liberty and Bluefield State.
